-1/+2 and 520 conversion

I have decided to go with a -1/+2 gearing and a 520 conversion, I just wanted to know from you guys who have already done this, how much top end do you loose, about what rpm is 80mph at in 6th and can you feel a significant difference in low end power. Also what companies do you recomend for parts. All input is appreciated.

I have the Vortex sprocket with the RK Chain, and the gain down low is well worth it, as for top end i lost some but i dont usually cruise at 150 mph anyway

Check out this link, input f4i and your custom configuration. Looks like you give up 11.3% of top end, rev limiter kicks in at 128mph, your speedo error will approach 20%. I have this mod on my track4i. Your chain/sprocket wear and mileage will worsen. It does give you more drive. That speed is gonna cost ya!

I did a 520 with -1 in the front. The low end is tremendous in power and speed.
Pros: Low end power excellent. Can bring front end up with the twist of the wrist.
Cons: Bike runs at higher rpms, fuel mileage is lowered, top end suffers. Speedometer inaccurate. I installed a Speedohealer to correct my speedometer. But I have never topped out the high end since my conversion. So I don't know what the top speed is, I have never needed to go that fast.
The rpms with a -1 at 80 mph is approximately 7000-8000 rpms. Never really looked. Posted speed limit is 75 mph on the interstate.
Conclusion: The low end power is worth the trade, cuz I don't need to go over 100 mph. I like to zip around town.

Does the bike feel a lot buzzier with this conversion? And if it is buzzier, when is it most noticeable? Some bikes don't like it; the naked SV650 is one as it already has lowered gearing compared to its half clothed sibling. Thanks for feedback.

it's buzzier from 6K and up.
stick with 525...and -1/+2...
you don't need the insignificant benefits and cost of a 520 when you do -1/+2.

The conversion provides 2 benefits. Lowering the gear ratio improves acceleration. This feels very similar to riding around in 5th instead of sixth gear and you can see how that feels yourself. The bike will vibrate more at a given speed because it is running 11% higher RPM.
The second benefit comes from the reduced weight of the sprockets and chain. The chain is thinner, hence lighter, the sprockets are aluminum, also lighter. The weight difference isnt great, but it is rotating mass. Performance might improve as much as loosing a few pounds of rider weight or a few ounces of wheel weight. I've heard dyno guys say you might get around 1-2HP.
I dont think it makes much sense for a streetbike, costs almost as much as a track day, and increases your maintenance and operating costs. It was practically the last mod I did, and rated well below better gear, rider training, suspension and brake work in terms of return on investment.

I have an 00 F4 and I went -1/+3...whereas before the bike was very sluggish at low rpms...now it is just as quick low end as it was high end before...not quite sure top speed yet...i got an EK SRX 520 conversion kit and Renthal Sprockets...
Oh yeah...and I got a speedohealer ($100) to recalibrate the speedometer...it was off by 20%!!! (so if I was going 100mph it would say 120mph)
I got 39mpg last time I was out (country ride avg speed 50, but at times 80+)

I have a RK 520 -1 front on order and i'm excited about getting it. Needed to replace the chain for awhile now.

I just put my 520 -1/+2 on last week. There is still snow in Michigan. I am ready to get out on it and see the difference. I think it will be well worth it. The speedometer is 20% off? Is that common?

after changing gear ratios, the speedo will be waaayyy off...After the -1 +2 conversion on mine, it was about 18.5% off... I lost around 20 MPH top end. So I top out at 143-145...you dont REALLY need to go that fast anyways nor are there many roads around where I live that are long enough to reach 160ish MPH anyways

i also have this. it was just like this when i bought it, if i had a choice idk what id choose, b/c i dont know what my bike would feel like w. stock gearing but i would like the speedo to be right.
when you have this done, does it make ur speedometer read faster, or slower than what youre actually going?
how much gas mileage might it be costing me?
i may prefer the better mpg than low end power, so i may want to go back to stock, i just need some opinions.

The speedometer reads faster than you are really going. If you have a speedohealer then you know your actually speeding when you get pulled over. As for gas mileage, most of it depends on how you ride. How many rpms you ride at, what gear you ride around town in. With a -1 on my bike and riding around in 1st and 2nd gear at around 7,000 rpms. I get about 130 miles to my tank, then my reserve bars kick in.I average about 37 miles to the gallon in town.

I got the RK -1 front sprocket and 520 chain kit installed yesterday. It retails for around $130.. I really love it. I don't bog the engine as much from a red light.. and good acceleration all around. I personally love it.

Glad to hear you love the kit...I had the same kit on mine. When it was time to replace sprockets, I went with -1+2 and loved it...it felt lika a whole new bike to me and I had to relearn throttle control for wheelies. the amount of extra accelleration was amazing. Next on the list is a quick throttle kit

yea i noticed that cruisin around on mine i have try to ride in like 4th gear at like 35 miles an hour (this is also with the rpms at like 4000 maybe?) i know when i was cruisin at like 60 (on the speedo which is wrong) so less than 60 i was revvin at about 5500 rpm in 6th gear, is this high?
i sounds like im gunning it but it just to keep it at the speed... this is also my first bike so it may b ehow loud sport bikes always sound, so i was just wondering is that was a high rpm...
also when you ge the speedo do you have to calibrate it? or do you just plug it in and it figures out how much everything is off automatically?

Your RPMS are normal...
You have to go through a series of steps to calibrate the speedo healer. I think someone posted a link to the web site that might help expalin the steps needed

ok, how far off is the speedo usually when you do this conversion?
i just want to know because i havent had time to get side by side someone i know and see how fast we are each giong (to find out how much its off)
and i def cant afford a speeding ticket, but it seems like when my speedo is at like 48 (in a 40) im getting passed by almost everyone... and i know most ppl go over teh speedlimit but this people are passing me like theyre going 10 mph faster than me... so i just wanted to know an approximate of how far it could be off...
is it like 4 - 5 mph, or is it more like 10-15 mph??

I am new to bikes, but I don't think it would work like that with gearing. It would seem that the faster you go the furter off you your speedo. I don't think you can say you are always 5mph slower than the speedo, when those numbers may be different at 35mph, 70mph, and 140mph. It seems you may be 5mph off at 50, 8mph at 80, and 15 mph at 130. Does that seem logical?

yea that makes sense.
so i guess what im askin is what is a typical percentage i may be off w. the -1/+2 vortex sprockets?
i just want to know because i dont want to be movin like a slug downt he road, but i dont wanna get pulled over either, so what is the average, or typical percent ur speedo gets thrown off with this set up?

What's the difference between 520 and 525?...sorry, newbie question.
TBFGhost
3/16/2008 5:42:20 PM
Chain size, the 525 is larger and stronger, it is what the F4i come stock with, how ever the 520 chains work as well and are claimed to be lighter and there for faster....in a simple way of explaining it.

Thanks that helps. So, I assume that you'll still get the extra torque with the unspring weight...with -1+2 then, but still have some characteristics of being stock?

a +1,-2 is off by 20% so it isnt a set mph

Yeah, you get the same ratio but the 520 chain is lighter....is it something most of us will notice on the street....i doubt it...maybe wear wise tho the 525 chain could last longer....but it is also a little more money so....had my bike not come with a 520 on it, I would have stuck with the 525
