I installed -1 tooth front sprocket and now when holding at steady throttle (cruissing along) I get a whine. I figure it is the chain , but why? I noticed the factory sprocket has a rubber piece on both sides of the sprocket and the new one is just steel.I have tried loosening and tightening the chain with no effect.

the rubber grommet doesn''t cause any sound when removed (although that is what it is there for)..i went -1 in the front and i don''t have a whine at all....when you changed out the sprocket...you change out the chain?
what pitch did you stay with?
a little more info on the swap might help...

Just the sprocket, and stayed with the stock chain 525.

thats why. Its best to replace chain/sprockets as a set.
