'01 f4 overheating

i just bought my bike 2 weeks ago. first bike so i dont know alot about bikes. the temps gone up to 230 a few times while sitting in traffic. is this normal??any suggestions.

You know what i'm cruizing these forums to find out that exact same question, when my bike reaches 225 though the fan turns on and keeps it there longer, however it will eventually see 228, at max 230, this only happens in the city at longer red lights. I have no idea what an operating engine should operate at and where in the engine is the sensor placed? as in where is it detecting this heat? I live in Utah, its high up and dry and hot. Could someone please shed some light on this. I dont own the repairs manual yet, but I think it would be in there.

edit i have a 2002 f4i with an arrow titanium exhaust, power commander and basicly a direct intake without much of a filter, I imagine this gives more power but also creates more heat, dunno, when I go cruizing through the twisties it sits a 180.

230 is normal. The bike will let you know if it is running hot (ie, the temp light will come on).

The worning lite will come on when the bike heats up to 260.

Try putting your air filter back in. But I think your bike will be fine

I live in L.A., so it doesn't get to terribly hot here, therefore my '01 f4i only sees about 230! & that is in heavy traffic...

i use redline water wetter, and a less than 50/50 antifreeze/water solution. it helps the bikes ability to stay cool at slower speeds but sitting still is a real killer for these little fours.

Mine reached 229 or 228 once, that was in 95 degree, Boston heat, last month in bumper to bumper traffic. The radiator fan kicks in a few degrees before that, I believe 224. I wouldn't sweat it. If the idiot light on the dash stays on, that's when you have a problem. Doesn't sound like its overheating to me.

Dude its ok. 230 is nothing, my bike gets to 235 all the time at stoplights in summertime, then you get goin and it drops to 180 or so. Worry when it hits 255-260, which it probably wont.

id check your fan fuse under your driver seat just make sure the fan is working so you dont see any higher temps

i have same issue... red f1 light flashes and bike starts missing at 226+ i just got a fuel pressure regulator replaced... until the bike heats up the bike runs perfectly fine.

Just do a once over on your cooling system, make sure it is full and do you know if you have 50/50 water/coolent mix? I have seen ALOT of people with cars and bikes just put in pure "coolent".  The "coolent"/antifreeze does not carry and transfer heat as well as water so make sure you get a 50/50 mix in there....It does not sound like much of a problem to me, but do a once over on your cooling sytem to make sure nothing obvious is wrong...
