Guys & Gal(s),

Right now, I have about 800 miles on an 06 blue & yellow 1000 and pretty much from the very first mile, I've noticed a high pitch noise while in 6th gear that is not present at any speed in the first 5.  Should I be concerned?  I cannot hear it at high speeds, but it's very pronounced at around 35-40.  It doesn't seem to be causing any problems (for now), but I'm concerned that if it is a bad bearing, it could lock up on me (something I prefer not to think about too much).  Even though I was suppose to take it back for it's first maintenance at 600 miles (as requested by the dealer), I just haven't had the time.  I was just going to tighten the chain and change the oil myself, but this 6th gear issue has me a bit concerned.  It doesn't seem to affect acceleration or normal highway riding, but it has me thinking non-the-less.

Anyone have a thought on this or has the same problem?

Thanks!

lmao.  what are u doing in 6th gear going that slow? And how do u only have 800 miles on that bike, didnt u buy it a while ago?  Try and keep in second while going that slow, third at worst homie.  dont u feel the bike bog down while going that slow in 6th?

Now thats what I call running through the gears! HAHA! No reason to be in sixth at that speed.

Good grief. . cut me some slack.  I do not RIDE normally at that low speed in 6th gear (it's more slowing under engine breaking than riding), but it's where I can actually hear it loudly and none of my previous bikes made this bearing noise.  For the sake of those that simply don't understand, the noise is there even when I'm doing 80+. . it's just that I can hear it very well the slower I go.  For those that are IQ challenged, the reason is that there is very little wind noise at that speed.  If I downshift to 5th, it goes away.

Man, I wouldnt worry about it.
I would bet that there is no noise when you are in sixth at the right speed to be in sixth.
Now if you are getting noise from gears that you should been in at a certain speed, then I would be worried.
But if you are not happy with our answers than go to the dealer and have em check it under warranty

Thanks for the thoughtful response, Slayer.  At least someone is trying to give me some decent advice.  The problem is just that. . the noise is there in 6th gear when I'm suppose to be there, but because of speed, helmet noise, etc., it's difficult to hear it.  It is under warranty and I will take it in. . .I was just hoping others were hearing the same thing.  Thanks again!

Those things have a high and low axle.  Are you sure your in high axle when in 6th, not supposed to be in low axle when in high gear, least ways not going as fast as 35-40.

My '05 Repsol has a little whine in 6th. It's not too loud, just barely noticeable. I'm not worried about it. It's got almost 7,000 miles on it now, and it's not any louder than it was.

Mine makes the same noise too, only in 6th. Except it's right at about 4k rpm and giving it a little roll on and putting it under load. No biggie. It's kind of like a whine, but hard to hear if it's there faster because of wind noise, like you said. No other gear does this.
Oh, mine's an '07 with almost 1000 miles on it.

One thing you could try is to run the bike through the gear on good rear stand.  But just be for sure that it is not going to slip off.  This way you can listen to everything.

This might not have anything to do with it, but... Do you have an aftermarket pipe? A power commander? Maybe your problem is it those items

Thanks for all the input, guys.  The bike is stock and I don't plan any mods this year.  I'll try the stand, but I'm pretty sure that I'll hear the wine.  Right now, I'm thinking that I'll just ignore it unless it gets louder.  Since I can't find any issues on other sites relating to the transmission issues, I'll assume it's semi-normal for now.

Well, maybe by that time they'll have the 6th gear whine at 35-40mph figured out....

If you have nothing to lose, just go to the dealership. It sounds like it's either normal or not a concern, but I'm sure you'd rather be safe than sorry.

If its under waranty then take it to the stealership...they will tell u that u shouldnt have it in 6th gear going that slow (even if ur in 6th going just over 80+....ur still goin to slow) and they will just laugh at u behind ur back.  If u try that rear stand thing ur bike is gonna slip and, well if u have ever seen the movie ferris bueler's day off then u allready know what is gonna happen.  Dont worry bout the noise.  There really isnt any need for u to even be in 6th gear anyways right now.  Wit 800 miles on it u should still be brakin it in, imho.  Take her out for a couple hours this weekend and hit 4th gear at the most (no more than 120mph) and u will be fine.
