Backwards shifting?

I don't know if this is one of those questions that gets asked all the time, but I've been told often about the whole backwards-shifting thing (like, 1 up 6 down I suppose) and I was wondering if y'all are all about changing it or if you think the regular way is better. Pros? Cons?
I think it's obvious that I really don't know anything about this. Maybe you guys could clarify for me? I'd appreciate it!!

I'll be nice for this one...its a MotoGP style shifter developed due to the extreme lean angles and high speed turns...there are turns where a rider has to up shift while fully leaned, so hooking your foot under the shift lever to up shift is flat out dangerous...with this reverse pattern you can leave your foot on top of the lever and tap down to up shift without the risk of ripping your foot off...
For the street all it will do is confuse you for a bit and be of no benefit because one should not be hitting lean angles as steep as GP racers do...

+1, so if your buying it for the street it gives you now real benefit except maybe in the ol' noggin.

Also I've heard that drag racers use them to save a millisecond of time between shifts.

Drag racers will use an ECU control system for their shifts. 100% WOT Clutchless shifting. I've also seen a few people use the rev limiter as a ECU contoller alternative. What is done is the rider keeps constant pressure on the shifter in the sirect he/she wants to go (generally up) and as the engine cuts fuel when it hits the limiter, the engine RPMs drop just a bit. when that happens the transmission sees hardly any load and slips into gear quickly and you're back in the green, until you hit the limiter again, when the process starts over.

The shift pattern is more useful than for simply upshifting, and in actuality, I see more of it's potential offered in downshifting.
In that respect, you don't have to bring your left leg out of it's position to downshift while in a corner. I have reversed the shifting on my F3 and after about an hour or so getting used to it - I'll never go back. I ride hard and fast and I have seen and felt it's advantages ten-fold.
Now for my question...
I'm getting an 07 RR in about a week or so and I'm curious about something. On my F3 the shift linkage is horizontal, on the newer RR's the linkage is vertical. I've looked at the setup and it doesn't seem that the new linkage will be so "swapper-friendly." It looks like part of the stator cover would be in the way of the shift knuckle, essentially not allowing it to be set at a 9 o'clock position as opposed to it's factory 3 o'clock position...
SO... anyone with a newer RR that has the reversed pattern? If so, did you have to do any modification to allow the knuckle to rest freely in the reversed position or am I just seeing things?

Well if you have a 7 speed transmision then yea thats right lol

Personally I swapped to the GP shift and I absolutley love it... And yes there is a learning curve invovled but once you get passed that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread. I highly recommend it. I have got all my friends to swap to it and they now love it as much as I do. If you rid a bike that is standard shift pattern you have to really think about what your doing at first but then it all comes back to you. DO IT.... It takes 5 minutes to do, and if you don't like it in about a week or so. Swap back.
DO IT!!!!!

So you did this with your RR? If so, then what year RR do you have? Is your shift linkage vertical? Did you have to do any modification?
???

the only disadvantage i see is that when you ride someone else's bike you might mess up and even worse if you let someone ride your bike
Our bikes have 7 gears? Hmmm...silly Honda, must of hid mine from me!

Why would you ride someone elses bike? Why would you let someone ride yours?
No, CBR's do not have 7 gears.
Can someone please answer my question? Can you reverse the pattern on the late-model RR's where the shift linkage is vertical???
Anyone???

It was sarcasm! LOL!
Call Honda if you don't know and no one else does.

Trust must be serious issue for you. Isn't that what friends are for? You need to get out more.

It's got nothing to do with... okay, yeah, it's a trust thing.
I just don't dig it. You can let people ride your bike if you want to, but I wouldn't ask someone, and wouldn't expect someone to ask me to ride mine.
Bah - forget about the reverse-shifting, I'll figure it out when they show up.

Man I hope people noticed that I was comenting on the fact she was saying she had 7 gears. 1 up 6 down that makes 7 gears geez people it's not as funny if I have to explaine it lol :)

Nah man - I was just annoyed because a couple of cats commented that they had done it but wouldn't come off what year their bike was.
Is nuetral a gear? I mean, it kind of is, but technically isn't... or is it? It's a lack of a gear, but even that mentions the word gear... therefore I nominate nuetral as a gear.
CBR's now have 7 gears.
Okay, 6 1/2 but that's my final offer.

It does not matter if you count neutral as a gear, it still is 1 down and five up or in the case she was saying meaning moto gp style it would be 1 up and then 5 down. As for me I don't want moto gp. I blip and shift down. If I had that set up then I would have to blip and shift up this would make it harder on the front of my foot so thats why I have not switched to this set up. Just wanted to point this out you never call neutral a gear??? You have 1st- 6th gear neutral is just called neutral :) Also if you look at this in math terms neutral would be counted as a zero. Your starting out with nothing meaning position 0 and then counting to 6 :).

Reverse (GP) shifting is pretty much a must at the strip, unless of course you have and air shifter, auto-tranny, etc.
But let me tell you, it takes some dam discipline and or concentration to go from bike to bike. (one thats normal / one thats reversed) Your guaranteed to screw up your shifting at least 10 times after doing so.

Dang - did you really just point out the logistics of neutral and why it's not a gear?
Humor is dead.

my bike is an 06' and yes the linkage is vertical. It is a very simple mod. 1st remove the linkage from the engine. 2nd remove the cover from the engine sproket. 3rd losen the lock bolts on the linkage. 8mm and 10mm I think. 4th install the linkage where it was once pointing towards the rear of the bike to face teh front. 5th adjust the linkage so that it doesn't interfere with anything and then tighten everything down. It literally only takes 5-10 min. Ride the bike around for a good week and I promise you will never go back. But you can if you want just as easily. Just repeat process in reverse. It also makes those up shifts without the clutch much easier... As far as other mods I have the basics Full exhaust, USB III, K&N, Brisk Plugs. I'm looking into doing the HRC head work but everything I've found has been for the 03-04. So if anyone know about this holla back...
