Hi this is my first post on this great board.  I just bought an 04 f4i for my wife.  It only had 490 miles on it and its in showroom condition.  The only problem is the battery is dead since the original owner didnt drive it much.

I called a local honda shop and they said for the newer f4i's you can only buy honda batteries in them and they wanted 129.95 for it.  Ive seen through online other brand batteries for it though?  Is the honda dealer blowing smoke up my butt?

Im considering this battery

Thanks for the help.

OEM-dealership stuff is always expensive.
Most 12V batteries of similar capacity (around 8.5 Ampere-hours) are acceptable.
You need to make sure the dimensions of the battery are ok, or you might have to do some custom fitting.
Search for replacements by part number (YTZ10S).
I'd say check high-feedback (>99%) sellers on ebay for gel batteries... or other online stores if you don't trust ebay.

I bought a gel on ebay for 40, only problem was I had to force-fit the cover of the battery compartment. Works great so far.

I am using Wesco batteries for my 750's and have never had a problem. Here is a link to their website directed at the one for the F4I.

I am lucky as they have a distributor in Orlando..just rode the bikes in and changed out the batteries on their lot.

I just bought a battery from a Yamaha shop yesterday. It has the same part number (YTZ10S) and dimensions and specifications as the Honday version. It's the same battery. Works fine. $89.

The Yamaha guy did tell me that you need to get one that Yamaha buys direct from Japan. If you get one that goes thru a middle man, $129 is the right price. I'm not sure how you specify which one...just tell him you want the $89 version!

a lot of the aftermarket batteries are slightly taller, so the battery cover/flap doesn't close all the way down... it usually still works though (meaning the seat still goes over it), but be aware...

Well I ended up buying a westco battery today since its in my home town.  It fits perfect, started right up and a one year warranty.  Thanks for the help.
