Hey guys, I have a 00 f4 with about 23k miles on it. Since it was raining and cold here for so long I didnt ride for about 2 months. The battery died. So I charged it and it worked fine for a few days I rode it Thursday. I start it Sunday and go to get gas when i finish filling up it wont start. A friend gives me a push and pop the clutch and it starts. Then when I am taking off in first I have to give it alot of gas and or it seems like its going to stall. Ride for about 5 miles to a friends house and its really starting to bog in first gear. Once I get up to speed it seems ok. Then when I get there I put it in nuetral while he runs inside and the bike dies. Push start it a few times and stalls again. Would the dead battery affect this? I am going to get a new batt tomorrow and charge it when the bike shop is open but what do you think is causing the stalling?

hmmmm sounds like the stator might be to blame

But once the bike is running would that cause it to stall?

Yes definatley, if you have a fuel injected engine it uses electronics for pretty much everything on the engine. Without your strator working properly you wont pull enough charge, and you're battery is the only thing powering your bike. And motorcycle batteries doesnt hold very much charge. I would pull it out and take it to a shop and have them test it to see if it is putting out enough charge before you go ahead and replace it. Electrical problems are never simple

. There could be more to this than we're seeing here.

My bike is carburated not FI. So I am thinking it may be the carbs or fuel filter? Also which way is the fuel switch supposed to be coming out of the bottom of the fuel tank its horizontal when i looked on it. I cant remember if its supposed to vertical or not?

Check your choke over, make sure it isn't sticking.
You're battery could be shit too, but check it fluid levels to be sure you can't salvage it.

I checked the choke switch but where do I check its connection at the carb? Do I need to take fairings/tank off to check it?

Yes. One or the other, tank is probably easiest.

Update: picked up new charged battery and installed. Looked at petcock and it was turned off... how that happened I have no idea. Started bike warmed it up and tuned the idle speed and it runs like a champ. So, in short I think the idle had needed to be tuned for awhile anyways just kept getting worse then battery went dead and was shot. So both problems fixed and running strong with 23k and counting.
