I have an 05 f4i and am presently in the process of acquiring the parts necessary to do the dual seat tail conversion. What do I need to do to the black 01-03 subframe to make it match the stock frame of the bike? (i.e. chrome, powder coat, paint?).

im pretty sure you can polish it man it you search by POLISHING or im sure you can get it powdercoated the same color but i dont know for sure. im going through the same process as you right now doing the seat conversion and have a black subframe

Yep, if you just strip off the black coating the aluminum underneath will match the frame fine. I believe the product people have used in the past is called aircraft stripper or somesuch...

Yeah I've seen a bunch of the conversions done on the 2004-2006's and I was wondering why no one noticed or bothered to match the subframe to the silver frame on the 2004-2006's
it's all in the details!

Does anyone know if I will need to just strip the black coating or will I have to sand and polish it as well for it to match

well its not going to match perfectly either way. if you strip the paint off its just going to be a silver chroma grey like your orginal subframe but not a perfect match but still would look better

Yeah I dunno if that's OEM then
The 2001-2003 frames & subframes & swingarm were black.....then the 2004-2006's were silver/aluminum
