im new to motorcycles and i am learning as much as possible, but one thing that I haven't really gotten a good grasp on was milage for bikes. i know that it is very rare to see a bike with high miles, but im also not really sure what high miles would be consdered. i was looking at buying a 2005 cbr 600 rr with 22k miles. some people tell me that it is a lot of miles but it wont really matter as long as the bike is well maintained. i know the seller personally and he commuted to work with it for 2 years and thats why the miles got so high. i know the bike was taken care of, theres not a scratch on it except his passenger seat fell off on the highway... i like the bike a lot and think that the price is reasonable... but i was just looking for what people thought about high miles...

People who fear high mileage on a sportbike do so because most bikes are just hammered on: stoplight drag races, burnouts, and god forbid some fool jacked the gearing trying to wheelie easier and spent two years beating the transmission with constant clutch dumping. BUT, if you know the person, 22k isn't a crazy amount of miles for any engine with regular oil changes and maintenance. A valve-shim job might be in order, sprockets and chain, some greasing of the wheels and links, but beyond those few things, not much to service unless something breaks.
I'd be kinder to an older engine though. Warm it up before riding. Ride in higher gears in town to keep revs down. Save your revs for when you need them most. Yet I would still hammer on it a bit. Hey, it's a sportbike.

if you're new to motorcycles, and are trying to learn as much as you can about them, the first bit of information i'd impart on you is this:
A SuperSport motorcycle (like the CBR600RR) DOES NOT make a good beginners motorcycle. look at different models such as the EX650, SV650, or the Kawaksai and Suzuki 500's. you will learn more than one can possibly tell you about motorcycling on these motorcycles in one season than a lifetime of lecture.

Yea i know him personally and he was not one to beat on his bike, by no means... i know everyone is gonna get on it once in a while, but hes not the type to do anything stupid. He told me that he just replaced the chain and a few other things. He is askin $4500 for the bike..

Couldn't you at least address the original question?

Heyas Newbie!
Welcome to the club of newbies- I'm one 2!
From all that I've read off this forum, these oldies ride millions of miles per weeks! and keeps awesome maintenance on their bikes.
Then you have people like me who has had the bike for about a month now and can barely put more than 5miles on it in a month. Hell I haven't even check anything of and off the bike yet in a month besides looking at the refill thingy - brake fluid?- on the windshield or handle bar there.
One last thing. What KnightSlugger suggested for you and about me a few weeks earlier.
He recommends other easier bikes to start off with for you and for me a CBR125 or so.
I only wish I'd known about ALL that other stuff like the 110cc 125cc 200cc 250cc and such. I knew nothing about bike's except what I saw on TV and what the guy's rode at the parks nightly gathering!
If I had known things like that existed before I bought my '07 RR I would of taken Knightsluggers advice and bought instead not the cbr125 but a super pocket rocket 110cc (looks like the REAL thing but about 12" shorter on the height thing) and cost only $580 instead of $11500!
This '07 is so over powering it! Still can't seem to get use to the power of having the bike drag me forward after my 6th ride.
Err...Sorry....anyways I think that if it has great maintenance it'll be a great bike...if it has alot of milage and the owner is like me then you might want to have some bike pro(mechanic) look at it first.

Mileage is all in the eyes of the beholder. A cruiser with 22K miles on it would be "just broken in" by alot of peoples standards. Dorkbiker was right in that, for sport-bikes, they tend to have a hard life. They embody a "thrash me" mentality to many many people. EVERYONE (who's in their right mind) will wind it up and play some from time to time. You didn't buy this bike because it sat comfortably. :) Anyways, The price, to me, seems a little high, I would try to talk him down $500-1K. But that's just be me. A good bike will last a long time, but in this ones case, checking the valves is something I'd plan on paying for as you make your offer, because you'll need to do that.
There! Answered the original question. :) That being said, I ALSO agree with Knightslugger... very much so. I made myself spend a full year on a honda rebel (250cc cruiser) before stepping up to my 07 600rr... and I had some dirtbike experience even before that. Check your area for the "MSF" rider training course... it'll teach you all the real basics, and save your new bike from some scratches (or worse) with the information you learned. (My training course had it's own motorcycles, 250cc cruisers, to learn on. You didn't have to bring a bike to learn to ride there!) Oh, and WEAR YOUR GEAR! Woo! /end preaching.
