Why do you call in sick?  I usually am never actually sick enough to call in sick.  Usually, I use them as days that I don't want to go to work.  My work pays you for whatever sick leave you don't use...unless you're salary (which I am).

i haven't been sick in years, not sick enough to miss work. I miss a few days here and there though just because some days i don't want to do it.

I've done one of the above at some point at my last job (the job that made me realize I need to go back to school), but generally, I do not call in.

I have only called off 3 times in the 4 years I have worked at my job.  The first time was to go buy a vehicle.  The second time was because I was snowed in and my car was major stuck in my driveway and the third time was to go take my motercycle endorsement test-witched I passed then went and bought the F4 that same day.  The day I was snowed in-my boss knew that was the reason, but the other to times I called in sick.

I try not to call in too much. Normaly, the only reason that I call in is for my GF. If we need some catching up and I'm realy sick of work, I'll call in. When she has doc appointments, not all the time, but once in a while.

Paid sick time is a benefit. Not using that is giving a full day of pay back into your employers pockets. Besides, it's "sick/personal" leave. A little personal health day is actually beneficial.

I call at mostly if:
  • Sick...usually debilitating
  • If it's snowing...I work 50 miles away. A weeks worth of pay (deductable) isn't worth losing.
  • If I have an abundance of time coming to me and I'm about to lose time. (generally if I  don't feel like going in) (but very rarely on a Monday or Friday)
Now I also will work a few hours later every so often. So I really don't have any guilt over the matter.

Yea i was thinking about this today. I have 80 hours of vacation and 80 hrs of flex. issue is i can only carry 40 hours of flex into the new year. So i have 3 weeks to use 40 hrs and i won't beable to use or else all my OT is gone right now i'm sitting at 17 hours of overtime. Over the next 2 weeks i will have atleast 20 hrs of ot and it will all be gone if i call in sick. What to do?

lose the equivalent of a weeks worth of pay or half a week...Except on the level that 20 hrs is cold cash in your pocket....what is more important?

We also can't "carry over" more than one year of vacation or sick leave.  Again, I chose to use time that is offered to me that I wouldn't have a need for.  I rationalize it by telling myself that I am losing money if I don't use it.  When you have overtime, your Uncle Sam rapes you on taxes.  Hard call...

When you work for yourself, is it really calling in sick?

I am lucky enough to write my own schedule. Great for snowboarding in the winter, and being able to take off for those perfect days to go riding.

the first time i've ever missed time at work was last monday
i screwed up my schedule and thought it was my day off
everybody thought i was dead
maybe i should lay out more often so they don't worry so much

also think about it takes money to goto work.. you have gas, lunches , snacks while on break... all this lil stuff that can add up . so some days you are bette roff not working and saving the money you have and it will lower the amount of taxes taken out so you save money there too

I had a chronic case of bronchitis earlier this year that kept me from work for as much as a week at a time (but that time when I went to the doc - I actually had low-level pneumonia) so now that I've finally got it kicked, I go to work everytime my name appears on the schedule.... come springtime though, when the beautiful days demand a ride... well.... we'll see when we get there.
