I`m presumin you have a 600RR cos you`ve posted in here, you lift off your tank which is only a cover and underneath you will find an airbox, the lid is held on with a few screws once removed you`ll be able to see the air filters.

If it's a new bike, what do you need to get to the air filter for?

When you look at the fuel tank, you're actually looking at a lot more. The cover hides the fuel cell, which is from the fuel lid back and your air box, the front half. You have to remove the seat, both inner covers (plastic that covers the top of the air ducts) and a couple bolts from the side fairing. All of this is just to see the air box. You then have to un-mount your ECU, then all of the bolts to the air box cover. And then the filter is bolted in with 3 screws. Here's a pic to help out a little.

Your manual will recomend every 12k miles but you should check it to make sure its still clean if you leave it that long, i changed mine at 8k because it was filthy.

it depends on your climate and conditions. I switched out to a K&N at 3000 miles and mine old filter looked new. I ride in all weather, but we have very little dust around here. Pollen out the ..., but no dirt. Very few rural areas.

I guess he doesn't care to inform us why he NEEDS to get to his air filter in his new bike...is the bike new/used or new?
