Chain life

I got 21,000 miles out of my chain for a 06 1krr. Is this normal wear or should it have lasted longer? I do oil it every 3 to 5 hundred miles and check for wear. Since Im going to change it here soon, do I need to swap out with new sprokets?
Thanks for your help!

If you keep it well mantained (every 500 miles) then it can last for 30K miles or so (on a 525 which is stock). a 520 chain on a 1krr will last around 8-12K miles if you keep it lubed (from what i heard). But yes i would do a whole new set (chain+sprockets) if you like, you can always drop a tooth in the front and add 1 or 2 in the back for more acceleration. from what i heard, alot of people love the -1,+2 or even just -1,0.

Vermino is spot on, however chain life depends a lot on how you ride also. A lot of drag racing, or wheelies/stunting type of riding is gonna shorten it quite a bit.

on the 04 1k I thought the stock chain was 530? what happens if you go from a 525 to 530?

WHOOT what did i win?!?!?

on 04-05''s they are 530, but 06-07''s are 525s..
going from a 525 to a 530 is just like adding about a pound of rotating mass on the motor, which will make the bike more sluggish but more dependable (less likely the chain needs to be changed).
Usually only stunters use 530+ because they put a constant abuse on the chain (yet most stunters are using 600cc''s anyways, so it''s not like a liter bike''s power). Track bike are usually 520''s so they keep the rotation mass as low as possible (every pound counts on the track)
i say 520''s are good for 600cc (last around 12-16K miles) where liter bikes (last around 8-12K miles) so if your just a weekend warrior and ok with forking out $300 or so every 8-12Kmiles - go for it. but i would be going thru alot of chains

ok good cause I have 04 and I just change my chain and sprokets not too long ago and used a 530 -1 front +2 in the back of course .

THanks for the info! Now if I go with the -1 +2 in the back, will I see a big drop in gas milage? I mostly use my bike for commuting and taking long road trips on the weekends.

Didn''t affect my mileage at all I still get the same.

haak30: quick note
the stock gears on 04 is 16 front 41 rear. I think the rear on the 06 is 42 but not sure so i''m not sure if it will make a difference on yours since it will be at 44 on the rear with the +2.

^^ correct
-1,+2 drops the max MPH from 186 to 150 (or so) redline*. But if you shift like normal (at 5-7K rpm''s) it wont affect MPG.
*dont hold me to that, just from what i''ve heard

I do know that it will drop my over all top end speed, but I dont drive 180! However I dont see how my gas milage wont change? If I drive at a constant speed, say 75, my engine will be at a higher RPM with the -1 +2 than if it was stock. Or am I incorrect?
Again, thank you for your help, you guys have been awsome and got me thinking about what to do!

it does affect mpg a bit. gets a bit less and i drive in that range, mostly lol. i got an 05 and put a -1,+1 520 conversion and it def takes off the top end but it sure as hell gets there a whole lot quicker. im thinkin mine is prolly toppin out a lil over 150, maybe round 160 if im lucky, but i also have a lil more into it. def gotta get another chain now, along with a new rear sprocket tho, but its worth it imo. maybe even go +2 in the rear this time. def was way sluggish in first gear before i did the conversion.

well it depends on your habit of riding.. I''m usually in 5th on the freeway hitting about 6-7Krpm''s but when i do a 525, -1,+2*.. My rpm''s will probably be 8-9Krpm''s in 5th, so i will probably have it in 6th now and be balanced out.. I like to be alittle rough on my bike (i get about 125 miles *when the light comes on* and this is no high-way miles.. so i never touch 5th or 6th gear) I know alot of people are thinking about gas prices like crazy, but a -1,+2* will not curve it that much but you get alot more acceleration, i''ve heard it makes your bike feels completely new. You can even just do -1,0* and it will be a totally different bike to you and you wont see a difference on the MPG. Actually if you want to be ballzys, the 520 would be less rotation mass which is less stress on the motor - so it might be better on MPG but that''s just a theory of mine.. The money you do save, you will probably just put back into new chains

.
Remember when doing a sprocket change, get a speed-o-healer or you will be racking bullsh*t miles and the wrong MPH
*(taking 1 tooth off the front is like adding 3 teeth to the rear.. the more in the rear you have the better the acceleration and easier to lift the front)

also i dont know if you have a PC3 yet, but if your looking for MPG - this is a MUST. I''ve been a slacker myself but i''ve seen a guy do his 06 1krr and that thing was a totally different bike from hooking up the USB to laptop.. freaked me out. (i just was having too much fun on my bike, but now it''s time to have some fun with mods)

The 520 conversion is fine if you buy a quality chain and sprockets. I beat the living hell outa mine and its in great shape after 5k miles. You shouldnt have to spend $300 either, paid about $225 for my setup if i recall correctly.

I was told to get steel sprockets cause they last longer but it was after i had gotten mine already but so far so good. I paid $170 for the kit (sprockets and chain)

Ordered my new chain/sprockets. Ended up going -1 on the front, how far off will this affect my speedometer?

if you only went -1 in the front you should be fine and your speedo should work the same from what I''ve heard it still makes a nice upgrade...

it will affect your speedometer a bit. when you install the sprocket, find a radar detector (cops leave them around town all the time) and just a couple of different speeds and write down each one (the one from your gauge and the detector) here is a linky
http://www.hooliganbiketech.net/hondacbr1000rrweb/1000RR_frameindex.htm*
*(instead of going 1 down in the front for Speedy - he went +2 in the rear, same thing but some people say if you going up in the rear instead down in the front you dont experience much of a vibration from the new setup - this is hear-say tho)

just to be safe get a speedohealer that way if you deside to go up in the in rear then you''ll be all set for that set up too. I still need to get one for my bike they run around $100.
