chain play question

>hey all ,
just looking at my chain I noticed that there is a lot of play (up and down movement) .
So how tight should it be ? I have a little over 2600 miles on it .

25-35mm free play although i run mine tight because i`ve noticed you get alot of chain slap on these bikes.

I don't know if it's the same for the 1000 as it is for the 600. My chain tension should be 1 1/4 inches.

I had noticeable chain stretch within the first 600 miles of ownership. It was around 50mm which is more than the recommended 25-35mm of slack. I adjusted this and it has been good since. I believe that you will get an initial stretch as the chain 'beds-in'

Remember to tighten it up with the bike on the side stand. If you use a swingarm stand you'll have to give it another 1/4" of slack. As the rear suspension compresses it tightens up the chain -- that's why you gotta have the slack.

i actually have the same problem and was told the same solution by my dealership for my 1000rr. but the thing is i am brand new to the motorcycle world and own almost no tools at all. my question is how do i go about making sure the chain has the proper amount of play/tension and if it doesnt, how do i fix ity and what tools am i gonna need? thanx for y'alls help

Go to Sears and buy you a Metric Socket Set, Metric open end/box end wrench set, Set of metric allen wrench's, Assorted size Flat Head and Phillips Head Screwdrivers. The nut on the rear axle is a larger size then you will receive in a normal socket set so you will have to buy it individually. Not that much of an investment and actually pretty much all the tools that any guy should have around the house anyway. Plus Craftsman has just as good of a warranty as Snap On and Matco etc......Enjoy working on your bike, take your time and do things right. Nothing like people dreuling over your bike and you being able to say I did that!!!!!

All the tools you need to adjust your chain are in your bikes tool bag. The process to adjust your chain is in your bikes owners’ manual. The only thing you will need to do after you tighten the rear axle nut "goodntight" is to go by any auto repair shop, preferably your Honda dealer, and have them torque the nut to specs like the manual tells you to.
