Just finished mine a few minutes ago. Mine took longer than most because of my extreme OCD. Perfect series setup with resistors, yellow LED's, and a great setup. THANKS!!!

I did this mod as well recently, good write up. I used non built in resistor LEDs from an electronics store so i had to wire some resistors into my wiring. No big deal. The leds are pretty damn bright...so bright that my camera had a helluva time getting a decent picture even in the daylight.

Comment: the reason the lights flash faster is because of the "fault" flasher, which is designed to let you know when you have a bulb blown and the LEDs dont have enough resistance to be detected, so the flasher "thinks" the bulb is blown and flashes faster to let you know.
Question? If you replace the flasher with a "no-fault" flasher, would the LEDs be able to handle the power without burning out (would keep me from have to wire in resistors)

Or you could just wire in enough leds to need 12 volts

Just to clarify for you guys...if you use LEDs that are set up for accent lighting from an autoparts store they usually have resistors built in to them to limit the current. The voltage has nothing to do with it, unless you wire them in series, then each LED takes approx. 2 volts depending on color. So you could only wire 6 in one series, but you could wire two series in parallel to make 12 leds. But I digress here....To fix the flashing speed problem you could either replace the flasher with one that ignores the load (pretty cheap), or you could wire in a resistor (even cheaper) to create the load. The resistors I wired in were not to fix the flash, I like the faster flash personally, but, were because the LED's I used dont have built in resistance, so in order to avoid burning them out almost instantly they needed a seperate resistor.

I just did this mod today, and it looks sweet! I've got a turn signal integrator hooked up to my brake lights as well, so what I did was I just hooked the LEDs directly up to my brake lights. So now, both the rear brake lights and my LEDs on my passenger foot pegs will function as both brake lights and turn signals! Pics coming soon . . .

If you use LED's without built in resistors, you can calculate and add 1 resistor to 3 LED's in series.
I use this site to calculate the resistor needed:
http://www.hebeiltd.com.cn/?p=zz.led.resistor.calculator I built a custom LED taillight with LED's and resistors. Looks A++, cost $20, and took 6-8hours. This site helps a lot.
You can do a LOT of neat things with LED's!

yeah im only using 2 resistors...one for each side wired in line with the wiring. They're ziptied to the underside of a crossmember under my seat....turned out to be an excellent place for them.

Off topic: Your a user over on ls1tech, aren't you?
On topic: This is real nice, could you wire them up to be used as turn signals or are they to covered/not lit bright enough?

ok im a bit lost on some wiring issues,,, it looks like likitysplit the original poster put all the blk wires to the one grn wire and all the red wires to the one orange wire. This wiring seems a bit weird to me? if done that way would all the LED's be getting 12v ea or no? isnt there a way to connect red to red to red then the last red to the orange and the same to the blk?!?! like link the LED's together then connect only one wired to + and one to the - and have them all still light up. wouldnt they be brighter that way?!? I am just curious b/c i am going to do this this weekend but i think i am going to make them brake lights instead of turn signals, havent decided yet. also i got some Pilot Automotive LED's from Pepboys. I think they have built in resistors im not sure, how can i tell?!?! Im a bit slow and cautious when it comes to wiring. not to mention O.C. Thanks for any help!!

sweet write up man, I just so happen to have a bag of about 80 leds that i planned on doing some ground FX with but Im for sure doing something similar to your post for my rear signals. looks nice

Got all my stuff from Radioshack.
LED's (6)
1 pack of resistors (depending on which LED's you choose)
1 small spool of solid 2 wire (black/white)
1 tube of Amazing Goop (to glue LED's into pegs.)

I can't wait to do this to my bike. One question....for all of us wiring-challenged, OCD people, what's the easiest/best way to tap into the turn signal wires? What parts should I get?

I spliced mine into the end of the stock signal so all i had to do was plug it in.

Whoever did my undertail used crimping tubes rather than end crimpers so I still had half the tube I could put the wires into and then crimp that down.
This summer I am going to re wire everything with plugs so they are easily removed. More fit/finish.

I know the thread is old but I really like it. I'm gonna do this to my bike.

I actually ran wire from my back turn signals down to my footpegs and but the led in that sp where that turn guard nubby thing was. So when i put my signal on it lights up the ground on that side. Its pretty coo. Ow and since i was wired..... i mean wiring,

I went ahead on put a led strip up under my seat that lites my entire ass end up blue (bike color) then when i brake it turns amber.

Any tips on running them strictly as running lights? I read this entire thread and I'm still kind of confused...I'm not the greatest at understanding electrical crap. Basically, I'd like to turn my stock tail into an integrated tail light, and use LEDs in the pegs for running lights. Possible? Tips?

To use them as running lights, just tap into any "switched" power source - like the rear lights, headlights, etc. - anything that comes on when you turn the key. I know this may sound vague, but it's "simple" once you figure out which wires are which.
There are online repair manuals that have wiring diagrams in them if you're having a tuff time figuring out the wiring.

ya once you figure our the wiring the hard part is just hiding the wires. but if your going to use them as running lights id be careful what color u use, what direction they face, and how bright they are(where im from cops will pull u over for ANYTHING). if you might even run them like to ur high beams that way u can shut them down if need be, unless u want a toggle somewhere

Thanks for the help. I'm probably going to use the toggle switch that was installed by the previous owner. Thanks again!
