So my bike failed the inspection, in my sorry attempt to get my bike legal in MD. My tags are expired a month and I wanted to get my bike inspected to get it registered. So here''s what failed lol...
No tag lamp
Master link not mushroomed (...?...)
Head Bearing Loose
Exhaust not secure
Left head light out
Unsecured windscreen

Your state requires you to get your bike inspected? That sucks..

Because I moved to Maryland after being in New York. In NY I had to get it inspected every year. But they really didn''t give a crap about bikes... In Maryland you get it inspected only once, but they''re pretty strict apparently about their inspections lol.

Left head light out
is your high beam burnt out or are the inspectors burnouts ?

Left is low beam, I have HID''s though, so sometimes they''re a pain in the ass when you turn them on and off and on and off again. It was working right before I got there... But mysteriously for 20 minutes after I got the bike back from them it wasn''t working and then randomly all of a sudden came on. I''m just going to stick a normal halogen in there when I get it inspected and put my HIDs back in after it passes.
I''m still not sure how to tighten my loose head bearing? lol

Once you get a new kanooter valve that should tighten up the head bearing. How was your exhaust and windscreen "unsecured"?

If I''m correct, a loose head bearing is a sign that you''re low on blinker fluid. Change your blinker fluid and you should be fine

There''s a nut at the top of your triple tree. Loosen it. Inside there are your steering head bearings.
Another thing: Don''t take your bike to a bike shop for inspection. Most gas stations do state inspections. Find one to do it just to get you passed and then take care of the maintenance items after you''re legal.
Chain: Depends on the type of Master link you have. I suppose they think your rivet master link isn''t installed properly. With the proper tool, it takes only 15 minutes. What tool? A chain press
The rest of the stuff you should be able to work out. You still in Charles County?

I''m in PG county.. Stupid gay ass gas station... I went there first and asked, and they said they couldn''t... I figured MD State Inspection, means Auto and Motorcycle... They told me to go to the Harley dealer because they do. And I knew someone that worked there, unfortunately he couldn''t inspect mine at that time... So they told me to go to their sister store... Clinton Cycle... and that''s when the butt raping began lol.. So I went ahead and got some stuff for my bike, only thing I got left is to wait for the new master links to come in, and to tighten my head bearing. Then I''ll be set.
And as far as my exhaust goes... Unsecured because it kind of moves around within the bracket... Nothing freakin serious... the guy is giving me a hard time.

yea if anyone needs to get an inspection deff take it to harley cause they dont really care bout street bikes... i live in hagerstown and i took mine out to harley and got it inspected. it was a younger guy and i talked to him and he said that just so everything works that it passes. after market anything doesnt matter(cause they dont really know what is and what isnt) and it was $10 cheaper then everywhere else!!! good luck on getting you bike on the road man.

IIRC you can take the bike back w/o paying an extra fee if you correct the items. Why keep going from place to place only to have someone else find something new.
Which Harley place you go to? Clinton, Laurel, or Annapolis?

I went to the Harley Davidson of Washington D.C. since it''s just down the road. I know someone there that could inspect it, the problem is I caught him at a bad time, and some guy did a quick pre-inspection and already had doubts about my bike passing, and I wasn''t totally sure if the guy I knew would end up inspecting so I cancelled...
So at the moment I got an inspection pending at Clinton Cycle lol... However, on the bill they said depending on what they could charge extra, I''m pretty fed up with them though at this point lol...
I live in MD and wouldn''t recommend going to a bike shop. They are more likely to nickle and dime for BS.
If you can, go to Potomac, MD to the Potomac Amoco station... on the corner of Falls road and River road. I have taken about 5 bikes to him. The guy used to race bikes and is cool as hell. Of course you have to pay again if you take it somewhere else.

I wouldn''t care about getting my bike inspected except for the fact that I need to get it inspected to get my bike fully registered, since I''m switching my NY stuff to MD. I''ll have to check that place out, I wont care about paying another 60 as long as it gets done lol.

Potomac is most famous inspection place in MD. My bike passed the inspection with no tag light...etc. & they are cheap too.
Yeah, they are "fair", no BS.
I used to work at a shop in Gaithersburg and we would sell people reflective tape for $5 if they didn''t have the stock reflectors.

Thanks a lot for all the help, I''ll give him a call tommorrow and setup sometime for me to go in and get it inspected. Appreciate all the help, I''m sick of this guy pickin at small stuff on my bike and raping me lol.
I am 99% percent sure Amoco won''t give you crap. Just make sure your lights all work, signals, and you tag isn''t behind your back tire and you will be fine. Out of 5 bikes he has never done more than make me move my tag (he was right because I moved it back after the inspection and got pulled over) and fix a bad connection on my rear blinker. He has never ridden the bike or even made me start it. Plus he''s cool as shnit!

Hell, definately need to go there then, I installed some bright ass tag lights in spite of that other dude. But now I guess I don''t need to go overboard with everything and just take it there.

Oh yeah, one more question. Is any place that''s certified as a Maryland Inspection center supposed to do automobiles and motorcycles? Or is it up to them whether or not they do one or the other?

I don''t know the laws, but I do know there are very few places that do both around here.
