umm i just took my bike in today to the dealership and they gave me a $135 quote on changing the oil... you think they are taking advantage of me or is it just in my head? (serious question.. i really dont know how much it costs)

yep do it yourself for the price of oil and filter

(I use repsol 4t so the total is 50 bucks and about 1/2 hour labor)

you really arent getting shafted because standard shop rate is about 50-60 bucks an hour

so throw in the standard dealer mark up on parts and thats about right

why arent you doing it yourself?

had to take it in anyways because the netural gauge wire had a short in it.. so it set off the fail-safe of the kickstand when you bring it back down.. it's wierd haha

but i just thought get the oil change while getting it worked on - i been hella busy with x-mas shopping and what not. Well i was just making sure i wasnt getting shafted or taking advantage of me because i'm a kid..

The thing that you should understand is that 135 is book + parts and mark up !! But all those guys can beat shop time!! You should start going there as a destination every once and a while hanging w/the techs in the service department and before too long you'll get the "preferred customer" treatment !!! I've been hanging round the shop in a similar mannor and I get a 25%discount on anything in the store!! Preferred customers bring back a steady flow of cash to the shop !! Just a thought !! But I have been up there since 1994 so it may take some time... Good luck G

u can do it yourself for prolly $50 the first time (cause u got to buy the filter socket) and its a lil less the second time. No way id b payin 150 for an oil change ever. That sounds pretty damn high so see if they are going to do anything else to the bike while they have part of her open. Id laugh at them if they told me $150.

that's probably right... after 600 miles the 1st oil change and check up they say is like 148. but suposedly that's change the oil, check to make sure it's wearing in properly (i guess tires, brakes), and check chain tension, replace fuel filter? i agree it sounds high. but that is what they told me. weather it's wright or wrong??? i dont know but that's what my dealer told me... then like every 4k miles it's like 70 bucks, then at like 15k miles it was like $120..... that's what i was told...

Thnx for that info, I wasnt sure what they were actually going to do for the 600 mile mark. Cuz Im do for one. I was debating on doing my own oil change, but I figure just to turn it in on the safe side.

I did a oil change myself i have a 06 and it requires labor taking the faring off maybe thats why the charge is high! my f4i didnt require the loswer faring to be removed soo thats from my experiance i did it myself for$20 and some change using honda oil hpn4 and stock filter! time took about 30 to 45 min!

owners manual tells you what they do
pretty basic stuff
checking chain, clutch, throttle free play
oil change

considering that the manual tells you exactly what to look for just do it yourself
remember to save all receipts so you can prove it was done

i guess i feel the 1st one is kinda pricy but you wont need it again for 4k miles... so 150 bucks for a year. then 70 a year for the next three or four years doesn't sound that bad to me for a new bike. it's a 12,000 investment. it's worth 70 a year to me....... but i guess after i've had a few bikes and ten years down the road i may feel more comfortable doing it myself? just my .02

yeah it might be pricey - but i got my 95 CBR done for $58.. i showed him the receipt and he is like "oh wow, who gave you that price?" im like "you guys.." he was like "uhh oh - well prices have change alot from the houseing market."

pretty much i was rolling my eyes because i'm 21 and i know people would love to take advantage of me.. whatever, pretty much when i get this netural problem fixed (it has a short in it) i will never go to that Honda dealership again. They kind-of rubbed me the wrong way the whole time it feels like and still doing it. (they say the short is because of my alarm system i installed, which the short in the wiring has been going on since i bought the bike *oct 13th* and the alarm system was installed by me on oct 28th) so yea that makes sense that the alarm system does it.. Now i understand they are just doing there job and how do they know i'm not lieing.. well Dave, one of the service guys saw the problem before the alarm system was installed - well guess what? he was fired sometime in november.

GRRRRRRRRR.

oil change for $135 ?
damn that's more expensive than a Lexus dealer's price

are you SURE you were @ a Honda dealer ???

no but seriously - DIY is the way to go when it comes to oil changes
a liter can of 10w-40 Repsol costs $25 and the filter will be a few more

they are just trying to say it was ur fck up instaed of theirs so the warranty wont come into play and u have to pay. some of them techs can b a$$holes and others can b cool. Guess it all depends on who u get. after u get that problem fixed i sugest doin all the maintenance on it urself, it aint that hard and if u do end up havin any problems the people on this board can usually help u

They're trying to bend you over and give it to you dry. lol. An oil change & service at my dealer never exceeded $60.00. I save quite a bit of $$$ doing it myself now. I got a discount on oil when I bought it in bulk. I usually change my oil every month because I usually put on about 2500 miles on month on her. So having oil and filters on hand is nice.

I would say download the service manual and do it yourself. Makes you feel better knowing you did it, and you save quite a bit of $$$.

If you choose to do it yourself, here's a basic tutorial:

The only time the dealer touches my bikes is when he puts them together.I bought a GXR 1100 in 1986 after 3000 miles I think it was they said you needed a valve adjustment.I took it in they said they did it.I opened it up and checked the valves and out of the 16 more then half were off.tune ups on them was easy they had screw down valve adjustment.Anyway I dont trust dealers I do all the work myself I feel safer that way

like i said, it was just for convience.. i didnt really have time to change the oil myself. But trust me, i will never go back there again once i get my bike in normal condition..

pay the money & get the services when u r scheduled. 600,4000,8000..etc. i have a 06 cbr1000rr,did all the services at the dealer on time , at 4002 my # 2 piston rod bearings and crank ****ed up , replaced by honda no questions asked ( $4000 worth of work ) if have the warranty (extended n my case ) let the dealer do there thing, my bike runs fine & i have piece of mind knowing that if something goes wrong i take to the dealer & it gets fixed no questions asked, because everything is on thier computer service record. these guys cant help u if your bike ****s up and u cant find your reciepts . any little noise or quirk i throw it at the dealer and thier r no questions asked. piece of mind, priceless !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! go honda go !!   i ride the shit out of mine have not had any other problems ....

The Honda dealership I work for costs less than $50 for an oil change and we check your tires and brakes.

yeah - the $135 was just for oil change... there full service like chain lube and what-not is $205 or so.. I got a coupon for (1) free oil change next service so i took it in today to get it done. Well he is like "well this is for full maintance service, not just an oil change" he also said "well the coupon is alittle misleading and is meant for a full maintance service so there nothing i can do about it" so i told them whatever and walked away.. I swear - they are such sharks...

when i get up to idaho, ill see what there prices on an oil change is..
