For $5.00 you can fix the problem and not have to buy a MCT!

i was told by a honda rep to get a longer sealing bolt, and a nut then hand tension the stock tensioner, then screw the longer bolt in on top of the factory internals, then lock it up wih the lock nut, apparently it will stop the factory tensioner from backing out.... am lookin at the mod atm....

I must say this is NOT my words...it is from the SCUDMAN himself at www.floridasportbikers.com

If you would like more DIY knowledge go over and register!

Honda Cam Chain Tensioners, yes they suck big time but there is a $1.50 fix for the later Hondas, F3 and up. If the CCT has a plug (bolt) at the outer end remove it. Buy a 6X1X30mm bolt and nut . Check thread pitch by placing one bolts thread against the other. They should nest perfectly. Thread the nut on the bolt and install the bolt into the hole that the plug was in. Gently (fingertip pressure only) rotate bolt until it makes contact with the piston. Hold bolt with wrench and tighten nut against the CCT case. Your CCT will now be silent. Why does this fix work? The CCT in the Hondas does not have a ratcheting mechanism. It depends on a left handed threaded shaft that is spring loaded. Due to the locking pitch thread design this shaft cannot back up. Sounds good so far. Unfortunatly the shaft stays in one place so long that the constant vibration wears out the shaft or the nut that the shaft rides in. The shaft gets sloppy and does not exert enough pressure on the chain pad so the chain starts to rattle at high rpm. The bolt fix exerts just enough pressure on the threaded shaft that it prevents the shaft from vibrating and backing up thus eliminating the chain noise. Yes you will have to adjust the bolt but so far I have no historical data as to how long the time intervals are in between adjustments. Maybe some of you big milege people can provide the data. Any way, hope it prevents you from buying a new CCT.

there is already an aftermarket manual cct on my 96f3....it doesnt seem to be vibrating too bad right now but do you think this is a worthwhile preventative thing I should do?

someone please post pics for this procedure. My CBR makes an aweful noise around 3-6 grand. This sounds like the best thing since the wheel!

Is this tutorial (the link with the pics) just for an F4i or should it also work for my F3??

Your install will be the same.  Things will look different to get to the CCT, but it is the same.  You might have to disconnect different wire or move a hose to get to it, but once there the allen bolts will be the same and the APE CCT will look and work the same.

Good Luck!

I'm doing the $5 fix and I bought a Stainless steel bolt 'cause I dont want rusting... will that spoil the CCT?

just curious if anyone has a sound clip of what this problem sounds like.  My 06' f4i with only about 1700 miles on it makes a clicking noise i can hear at idle but not really hear while im going.  and it gets a bit louder as i ride longer and harder and the bike gets hotter.

You'll only hear the CCTL making noise in the 5,000-6,000 RPM range.....that's the ONLY time

You can definitely hear it when you're riding too (over the exhaust)!!

It basically sounds like a valvetrain rattle between 3k-6k rpm.  The range seems to depend on how badly the stock cct is at the time.

I would personally not recommend the $5 fix. I tried it. Bike sounded great for about a 1/2 mile, then it started sounding like a friggin jackhammer. I mean it was LOUD. Freaked me out so bad, I immediately tore the valve cover off, expecting one or both cams to be off-time. Neither was, so I expected the CCT sled to be shredded; it wasn't. I can only hypothesize that the jackhammer sound was from the new bolt hitting the back of the tensioner shaft after the shaft managed to slide forward a bit and develop a gap.

I'm installing a manual tensioner at this moment (got on to look for adjustment instructions). Hopefully everything will be fine after getting it on correctly.

P.S. Sorry to ressurect a long-dead thread, but I'm sure others will be reading this like I did. Just trying to save someone the same hassel I went through.
