Has anyone done a valve adjust on a 600 f4i?
Is it difficult? Any issues to look for?
I have the tech manual but just wanted to see if anyone has experience with this.
Thanks for the help,

The valve adjustment requires the removal of the cam shafts to adjust the things so if you are inexperienced I suggest you leave it to a shop

Are you sure they need adjusting? Check clearances first. Most likely unless you have a wad of hard miles on it the valves are within spec. Shim under bucket just doesn't need that much adjusting. With most modern 4valve bikes, just getting the valve cover out of the way is the hardest part.

If my memory serve me correctly, the valves are to be inspected every 16,000 miles or so and adjusted as neccesary. Just like Chain said, the valve cover can be a B*%!@!!! If you are set on doing it yourself get a shop manual. Clymer has one with diagrams, wiring schematics, ect..or there was a link on this site for a downloadable version

A 4 cycle engine works like this: suck, squeeze, bang and blow. During the squeeze and bang portion the valves are closed. Suck = gas and air through open intake valves. Blow = exhaust gasses through open exhaust valves. Valves open in toward the piston - which is why they call breaking a retainer "dropping" a valve. Valve shoots into cylinder cavity and destroys motor.

Thanks for the explanation, do you guys know any good literature i could flip through that would explain how the modern sport bikes work? Also, go check out my post in the Off Topic, its for a Family in Need Raffle... Please take a look and buy a ticket or two.

Saw an article in ride uk which saw a 89 G (jellymould) model which went 25000 miles w/o an oil change and all tolererances were within factory and all shells, journals and cam's were unmarked! A Testiminent to Honda Engineering!

Indeed! Dont intend to myself! Thought that it was about a 16000 mile jobbie for the CBR600 but I'm quite particular about these things but as I mentioned the valve clearances were within tolerance, esp for the age. But regular oil filter changes are key, skimping saving is th biggest false economy ever. My old Citroen AX had done 130k+ and didnt burn any oil as it was well maintained but the torsion bar rear axle fell apart so the labour costs effectively wrote offf the car!

Bringing this one back up top.... BTW: does anyone know what the dealership charges(generally) for a valve inspection/adjust on the F4i?
Thanks,

between 200 to 400 for a clearance check...
to adjust...a couple more...usually you can get it all for $400 though cause they're already in there anyway.
it's not really that hard though.

Yeah, the biggest thing is time as you hunt for shims. Some dealer will trade them out, others will order them piecemeal, still others make you buy pre-selected packages. It's all messed up.
