Hey guys,

First post here, so hey to all you F1 riders out there. As an introduction, I'm a University of Georgia student who picked up an F1 about two or three months ago as my first street bike, but have ridden dirt occasionally for a couple years beforehand. So far I've been having a great time on her, until...

It died in the middle of the road for no apparent reason (full tank and all). What happened was that when I first started riding, it felt as if the bike had never completely warmed up. When I'd give it some throttle, it was almost as though it was only getting half the gas it was supposed to. Over a period of about 2 or 3 minutes it got worse and worse until it completely died and wouldn't start back up. Tried to start it up again for 5 minutes, then out of nowhere it fired right up just like normal, but soon the same thing happened again.

I'm a fairly DIY kind of person, so I'd love it if you all had any ideas about what the issue is. The problem is that since I haven't been riding long, I'm not very familiar with the mechanics of the bike, but I'm pretty comfortable working with this sort of stuff having done some basic work on my truck.

Anyways, just thought I'd give a shout out, say hey, and hopefully find out if anyone's had the same issue or know what's up. Thanks all!

This probably isn't very helpful, but it's probably your carbs. When was the last time the previous owner cleaned or synced them?

welcome dude, and yea definatly sounds like a fuel problem so id check ur carbs, fuel pump check to make sure all the lines are secure and nothing is pinched and maybe injectors, just my .02 hope it helps

it definitely sounds like a fueling issue... I had something like this with my old bike. It ended up being a petcock that couldn't flow fuel fast enough as it was half clogged.
So when it sat overnight the carb bowls would fill and it would run until they ran out. Then after it sitting for a few minutes the carbs would have enough fuel to start up again..

I hope for your sake it's just something like that and not an electrical gremlin

good luck

Awesome, thanks for the replies everybody. God knows when the last time the carbs were cleaned/synced, so once finals are over and i get it trailered back to the house I'll start digging in for the first time. Something's gotta be clogged though I suppose. I'm also going to be repainting/repairing all the fairings, so once she's all fixed up I'll post some pics.

Thanks again!

Welcome to the forum, I'm also a Georgian. Good to see another F1 rider in the area.

can you hear the fuel pump working? when you turn the bike on listen on the left side where your leg would be when you are sitting on it for a humming sound.

if youre around a december issue of sport rider mag, check page 84. a guy with a nighthawk had a similar problem, and the tech guys answered it, something about a clogged tank breather, but im sure cleaning the carbs couldnt hurt

check the pepcock along with the other things mentioned above because it might be clogged with rust.  sometimes the tanks on f1's get rusty and will flack off.

+1 to the carbs.  it is more than likely a clogged jet, buut when i had my carbs cleaned, it did the same thing at lights when i rolled on the gas, well.....it was because the machanice didnt tighten the jet very well and it vibrated out into the float bowl, hence it was getting WAY too much fuel.  give your carbs a nice once over, test your petcock and fuel pump, and check your fuel filter, it could also be clogged.  also, look in your tank for rust, if there is some, you need to get it acid dipped to get rid of it.  good luck.
