fork oil

how many of yall have changed out your front fork oil and what waight oil did u use my bike has about 45,000 on it and a frok seal busted after seting it down from a wheelie and yeah not good.

hmm, probably should've mentioned that the 87-90's thin forks don't hold up well to wheelies on the way down. at least you only blew a seal and didn't bend them.

i use 20wt. but you can use a 50/50 mix of 10wt and 15wt.

what is the recommended time to change fork oil other than when you bust one?

i change mine about every year since i rack up so many miles. by that time, there is one seal that is already on its' way out. i average 10,000 miles or so a year since i've had it.

i pry up the dust seal and check inside the oil seal area to see if any oil is pooling around the stachion. if so, then i know it is time to get a new set installed. i try not to wait till i blow one. if you keep your bike stored over the winter, then i suggest checking them when you look over the rest of the bike. sometimes you get moisture under the dust seal or the oil seals get hard and start cracking.

i don't remember what the manual says as far as changing them, i'd have to look it up. i'll post up tonight what the manufacturers recommendation is.

but yeah sucks but it was time to do alot of crap and i am puting new pergresive springs (srry bad speller)

I was reading my nauel and it says basically to undo the drain bolt on the tube at bottom. Apply presure to front brake, condense the fork till empty.OH yea, release the air presure fromthe fork first. Then fill using a baby bottle cause it measures in cc's

The thing I don't get is, it says to fill with Dextron, or 10w30?????
I'v changed the fork oil in my dirt bike many many times and it takes like 10w fork oil, so why transfluid that seems nuts?

trans fluid is very slick and has a high thermo coefficient. it has very good mechanical properties but unlike motor oil, it doesn't come in very many weights. thus you cannot tune the feel of the fork using tranny oil alone unlike using different weight combinations. Dextron just happens to have certain properties that are comperable to 10w whatever and can be used in place of it should you feel the need. for the purposes of the 87-90 model it is okay because it works within the design limits of the fork since it really does not have any adjustability (preload, rebound damping, etc.).

I'm thinking on changing my fork oil, but I can't find a procedure.  I have the Haynes Manual, but it's not all that great.  The drain screw at the bottom seems pretty easy to figure out, but how to refill the beotch is the question.  Can anyone help out?

It's an easy job to do by yourself. I did the whole job in just over an hour and it only cost me the price of the seals.

Can't you take the forks off and take them to the shop for the seal fix.
 
You could save some cash....

Congratulations.  Care to share the procedure to refill them?

no idea how but my fork seal blew about a week ago,can anyone advise what may happen if i leave it? i realise its no good for the bike or my safety but i'm lookin into getting another cbr as mine has reached its final straw. as i was riding home today from work it decided to cut out as if i had flicked the kill switch however i had not haha. i have also had problems starting her after she has been sat for an hour or so. any advice on what may be wrong? also when ever i give it gas there is a knocking under my feet . think its time to call it a day. when/if i buy another soon i am going to keep my current cbr and strip, thuroughly clean the engine, and slightly modify the body on the one i have at the moment hehe
