Helmet Protection

Well, a short while back, I was an idiot and banged up my helmet. Not in a crash, it just fell off my bike. Big mistake, I won't ever do that again. That whole experience made me really realize how fragile the finish on these expensive helmets really is. So, after buying a new helmet, I decided to try to do something about it.

I had just put the Tank Slapper on my tank, and one of their headlight kits on also. Seemed like the thing to try. I bought some of the roll material - not of the Tank Slapper (it's a static cling type material), but of the headlight covering, as it is thicker and has adhesive. I made some paper templates, cut out the material...I think it turned out pretty good. The seams are barely visible. It was not the easiest install in the world - the doubly curved surface of the helmet is much harder than covering the headlights...but it is possible.

Ouch. That really sucks. If you read the Arai manual they tell you to replace if it's dropped from waste high or above. I believe this line was written by the guy that's never had to actually pay for a $500 Arai helmet.

If that’s the helmet you dropped you may want to get it x-rayed
Dropping a helmet from as high as your bike onto a hard surface may render it usless.
Its hard to tell if some of those marks are damaged areas or just reflections.

Yeah, the worry about dropping it is why I purchased the new one. The new one is pictured. I don't think this stuff is going to save it from a major drop or anything, but maybe bumping it on a table or something as I walk by...that kind of stuff.

CJBettis, there are seams visible, but they really are pretty minor. I tried to take shots that would show the seams. The lighter areas hide the seams a little better.

I too have heard that about the helmets but it's not always true. I dropped mine before I took the MSF course, when I told one of my instructors about it he was able to look on the inside of it and tell wether or not is was still any good.
But dude that really sucks about you're lid, it's a nice looking one! Those markes look really bad.

I think what you are seeing are reflections...

Oh ok, cause with the refelctions it looked like it fell down a flight of steps.
In that case the lid looks good, and great job on the headlight stuff.
