i think the guy before me tightened his filter/drain bolt a little excessively... seeing as how i had to get an extension arm on my socket to get the drain bolt out... and i cant get my oil filter off for anything... the exhuasts are on the side of it so i cant go from there... i put the wrench in from the bottom, but theres no room to move it back and forth if you do it that way, so i was just wondering how most of you guys actually got it off...

i tried w. my hand as well and i turned so hard my shoulder kinda hurt and it wouldnt budge...

lol ya i was gonna say if its your first change the friggin honda robots on steroids put them on there with ungodly strength. try an actual oil filter wrench on her, should pop off with a lil umph, be careful though with the drain bolt, do you have her up on a stand at all see if u can get her a lil higher to put a lil more umph behind it to get under her. plus take your fairings off makes it a lil easier

yea i already got teh drain bolt out and drained it.
theni tried for about 20 min on the filter and couldnt get it so i put the new oil in and went riding, haha.
but yea i realy wanted to try to get the filter off w.o havin to remove fairings so i may just ride w. the new oil/old filter for this season, then do the oil filter/new oil/new spark plugs/new air filter next winter all at once when i have the fairings off.

I've used a large set of channel locks before to get the filter off.

I've hammered a old screw driver I don't use anymore through the end of the filter to get it started quite a few times lol.

Screwdriver through the filter, large channel locks or a good strap wrench. There are some really good filter wrenches on the market that act like a strap wrench.

It might be a little late for this, but I always try to change the oil and filter when the bike is still hot. Ride it around the block or two then let it sit for 5-10 minutes. This usually helps get the o-ring seal on the filter to soften up a bit.

A stubborn filter can be one of the more frustrating things with maintanence.

i let it idle to it warmed up wheni changed it, but it didnt get to full operating temp.
ill try doing it a few minutes after i get done riding tomorro and see if that loosens it up.

Take it for a little spin to get the parts moving on it, and it'll be more likely to budge. Put some gloves on because it'll be a bit warm between the headers lol. If it comes to it, just take one side of your fairings off to give you a bit more leverage on spinning that sucker.

Except I found mine on the inside of a door when I worked in a body shop, I have no idea who left it inside a door shell or how long it was there, but now I use it for my bikes....works GREAT.

The one above, or one of these:

http://toolmonger.com/2007/11/08/hot-or-not-claw-game-oil-filter-wrench/

The K&N filters are nice because they have a "nut" welded to the top of them for easy on and off.

Yeah, but for the price of K&N, that nut is not worth the price to me, but to each their own....you can get Purolator PureOne filters for $6 and they filter and flow great.

yea i remember my first oil change i used filter straps and wrenches on it and it wouldnt budge so i did like the other guys said and just jammed a screw driver through it and preto it was off...and remember when putting on the new filter tighten by hand so you dont run into this problem again....atleast thats what i did and it never leaked and it comes off easily now with a filter wrench

I went to Wal-Mart and got a cup type oil filter wrench that worked wonders on my bike. Wasn't very expensive and sure made the job a whole lot easier. You really should change that filter though, you want it to be filtering as best it can and obviously it's a pretty important part of the lubrication system. Running the new oil through the old filter you might consider changing your oil sooner than 3000 miles or whatever interval you use as well...

All this will do is crush your filter and you'll be more pissed.

YES!!!! GOOD!!!!! GET THIS!!!!!!

This thing is great just pick up the one that fits your oil filter (sorry I don't know the size) and crank away. It will pull it right off. The only thing to be careful of is make sure the filter doesn't turn and get lodged in there so the corners of the filter are where the flat spots are on the cap. Then you have to get a screwdriver to get it out. Other than that this thing is awesome, best $10 investment I've ever made for the bike.

PS The manual even says to start up your bike and let it run for 5minutes then shut it off before you change the oil. I believe that is mostly just to warm the oil up so it flows out easier since it isn't as think but maybe it could be to help soften and loosen the bolts.

i use a pipe wrench to get my oil filter off.  if u changed the oil but not the oil filter u pissed ur money away bc there still is a good amount of nasty oil left in the filter.  and u really need to take the fairings off to get at the oil filter if i was u i would start over and do it the right way.

also, don't be scared to take your fairings off - it's real simple and will make many jobs easier...  probably a good thing to know how to do

Maybe I just dont know how the crap to use that thing? lol I just put it around the filter and started turning. It got tighter and tighter and tighter than started crushing my filter. I returned it all scratched up and bought the 2nd thing which works like a charm.
