Hello,

new to the forum and soon to be new to cbr/bikes in general.

I was looking at getting an older cbr600 as a starter bike, and was woundering how much f f2 f3 can go for.

I would like a good running bike I can ride during washingtons 3 month riding season. (more like 2-3weeks a year :D,, pretty much when ever its sunny)

Like this bike a what would you pay for it?
1990 cbr600f 18k
Seems to be in good condition, a few scraps on fairings but nothing major for being a 1990.
Also what should I look for before purchasing such a bike?

How much would you pay for a f2 in same condition.

Thanks alot fellas

I dont want to buy a new bike in a year, I would like to get 2 or 3 out of it.

I know thats a tuffy
But a civic can usually go 200K atleast 100k if you kick the living hell out of em 300+ if you take care if em..
I just have no idea whats alot of miles for a bike in general
but I am interest in what the f1-4 can do

thanks guys

That seems too high for me. You might want to check Craigslist. I live in Seattle, and got my Hurricane for $1000. It has a lot of miles, but a recently rebuilt engine. But if you're willing to pay $3k, like the one you posted, you probably want to get an f2 or f3. Also, if you're new to bikes, you probably shouldn't care about getting the best looking one on the road. You can save a bundle if you buy one with rashed or even broken off fairings. It doesn't change the performance of the bike at all, just the looks.

Oh, and by the way, I ride 12 months out of the year here in Seattle. You can too. Get some rain gear and be super careful, but I think it's worth it.

that is a nice cane, however i wouldnt pay $3000 for it. you could find a much nicer bike for that price. the best thing to do is get a cane from a private seller, you can normally work them down. i think pretty much everyone, if not everyone on here, got their f1 for less than $2000. some pretty nice ones too.

as far as how long do they last, well....my bike has 40,000 miles on it now and still running strong. also michigan_313 i know has around 80,000 on his f1. goes hand in hand with taking care of your ride. undoubtably there will be something wrong with it at some point, but it can always be fixed. good luck.

a bike, any bike, will last as long as you take care of it, even basic maintenance goes a long way.

i take it that ad for the bike is from a dealer. so my guess is that the dealer has overpriced it. if it doesn't move, the price is negotiable. if the bike hasn't moved in a couple of weeks, go and see if they will price to sell. work'em hard, they'll probably hate you for it, but my guess is they don't want it sitting in inventory forever.

from the pic it is pretty clean, but i wouldn't consider it unless i saw it in person with the plastics off. if i start seeing rash, broken tabs, or one side is okay but the other is so-so then probably been down, how does it sound, how does it run, are the areas around the carbs clean, does the suspension sag or bomb out, condition of tires, condition of chain and sprockets, look inside the tank for rust, any chopped wiring, etc. i would look at all this even though it has low miles. no reason to drop 3k and have to spend another, what? $500, $1000 just to get the bugs sorted out.

replacement parts can start adding up quick. you can save yourself some money if you are mechanically inclined and have time to search ebay for stuff. if you don't have the want or the time, don't bother. it can get to be headache really quick.

for 3k i would look at a f2. plenty out there and in good condition. even if in so-so condition, parts are still easier to obtain.

6 years ago when i got my bike, this is what i got for 3k

bike - $2000
insurance - $150
registration/transfer of title - $100
helmet - $450
replacement items (rear tire, chain, brake pads) - $350

That is way too high to pay for an F1. Like everyone else said look into a F2/F3 for that money. Try to avoid the stealerships unless they are offering you something extra, but I doubt it. Like michigan said, see if they are willing to come down on price, it can't hurt. Check local classified ads or craigslist for private sellers, you will get a better deal, just be careful. I paid $1400 for my F1, 5 years ago, yeah it needed cosmetic work but everything else was solid and it had less than 20k on the clock.

I know this might be fubar (on a cbr forum)

but how about a nighthawk?

A little back round on me.

I have only ridden a bike,, for about lets say total time, 1-2 hours in my life.

I can control my wrist so power isn't a problem, but riding experience is. I wont go faster than my skills alow, I think. I just want an easy to ride bike that isnt too pussy. Something I can go into town and not be ashamed of myself, or something I can take on a Mt. Pass (stevens pass) and pass slow people with somewhat ease.

I want to get a honda. I am a true honda lover. Cars to generators. If it runs off gas and honda makes one, thats what I get.

I just want to get a cheap bike. Something that isnt too pussy like a 250 ninja that I will sell in a month because I cant drive it anywhere.
I want to buy a bike that will give me ample seat time so if I like riding and can gain enough experience untill I buy a brand new honda cbr or what not. I want a sport bike and I love honda so cbr. But is a
nighthawk a good stepping stone, or should I just get a older cbr, then get a newer cbr when I feel comfortable in the seat?

Thanks alot again guys for you responses (quick also thanks)

What is your guys opinion of the nighthawks?

How about this one?

what about that runability problem?

if it looks good and idles good, what should I offer him?

if thats what you want, go for it. sounds like it needs the carbs cleaned, replace the fuel, and that tank probably has some rust as well.

Looks Ok, but it was sitting for 5 yrs. Not only will you need to clean the carbs and tank but you will need change all fluids and get new tires. I'd start low and offer $800 just to offset the additional costs to get it operational. Just my opinion....

I also forgot a full tuneup. Plugs, filters, etc... Just take into consideration all that needs to be done and ask yourself if thats what you want. If your mechanically inclined and willing to do the work yourself then go for it
michigan_313

good bike once it is tuned up.

however... you need to see what the availability of parts is and price.

next point, your riding ability. i highly suggest you take a riding course or motorcycle safety course. it not about what you know but what you don't know that could put you in a bad situation. also, bad habits that you develop on your own are hard to break. you can further your riding skills greatly if you took a course.

no bike is pussy. it just depends on your skills and attitude. europeans ride scooters...everywhere. and they can outride the bikebikes anywhere except on open road any day of the week with a well dressed lady in heels at the controls.

you can start on any bike, cbr or otherwise in any model year. it's all up to you. i've known guys who started out on the bigger bikes, no big deal. but personally i think 500-600 cc is a good starting point. older bike will definitely keep you out of more trouble, mainly speed. but that is not all.

an older bike even if it looks like crap is good so long as it runs. reason being is that if you dump it, you wouldn't have hurt the bike cosmetically anymore than it is now. if you get a new(er) bike, say a really nice one, you dump it on it's side, the fairing is tweaked, hell, any piece of plastic for that matter, that's about $300... for one piece...ouch!!!!

insurance. are you young? under 25? wanting that new(er) bike? just bend over now and hand the insurance man a bag of sand. older bike, nobody cares too much about the older bikes. insurance is cheaper. and if you take a motorcycle safety course, you get an additional discount, well, at least in california we do.

i thought just like you when i went to go buy a bike. there were alot of things i thought i knew that i didn't know, a lot of things that i didn't consider. i would have gotten the same bike, but i would have been "smarter" about getting it. you'll learn a lot from just getting your first bike. if you know anyone who is mechanically inclined or knows a thing or two about motorcycles, then you should take them with you to check the bike out. if not, make a checklist of things to look at and look out for. this will help you negotiate price if it is really what you want to buy.

This is reallyl get off topic huh? (perhaps if an admin would like to move it? or shall I start a new topic.... Just if people keep on responding I keep learning more)

But what about other 500cc sportbikes? or other entry lvl through away bikes?

from the tech specs I read
12.8 quarter miles times. seems faster than any car I will ever drive in my life time, which seems fast. Which I have been in a few sports cars. Porsches and Vettes and what not.

is that going to keep a true beginner, with only 2 hours riding time ever, happy?

Suzuki GS500?
MaxKid84
10/11/2006 2:49:57 PM

I had an '83 nighthawk 650 as my first bike. Great starter bike and pretty easy to work on and drive safely.

However if your looking for a more sportier bike, the GS500 is a good median between a nighthawk and a CBR, even though it's not a Honda.

Any older bike that isn't currently running probably isn't your best bet as a starter bike, especially if it's been sitting for 5 years. Not only is it going to take a good weekend or more to get it back up to shape, but it was probably sitting for a reason, so who knows what else could be wrong with it.

I'd keep checkin craig's list, this is the time of the year for great bike deals, especially up north.

i almost bought an '05 GS500 to start on. just didnt happen. few months later i got the F1! from what i have heard the gs500 is a great bike to learn on, its got some speed, and it wont kick your ass like a new 600 will.

How bout a Buell Blast? Everything on that bike seems good. The styling, the brakes, the chassis/handling... may concern would be that 492cc single cylinder engine.... Is that going to be slow as hell? Bike weighs 360lbs -- "claimed 30 ft-lbs of torque at 5,500 rpm and 34 hp at 6,500 rpm" -- seems very gutless . Do the harley engine make power differently than other jap bikes? They torque make it up a little bit?

Ok, I figured out what I want.. What do you guys think?

An older CB 400-500-550-750

Something in the early 70s with a kick start. Going to lower it, put a new seat on it. and get some Cafe handle bars.

My question is,, whats the difference in those cbs?? is it just engine displacement, or are there other difference. Can someone give me a good link for a detail discription of cbs? or does someone here have loads of info?

What are the power differences? what are the motors? 2-3-4 cylinders? how much do these bikes weigh?

Anyone have one for sale?

HONDA POWER!~
