First off i have a 2001 f4i

I went out and started the bike to let it warm up and it sounded fine. Then i came back outside to get on it and it was idling under 1K RPMs and it was not a consistent idle either. Along with that the FI light would blink twice and then pause and blink twice again.

I did not have time to look at it for about a week because of school and then i went out to look at it again i started it up. Let it warm up. and then after a small adjusment to the idle speed it was idling correctly...1500 RPMs (i had messed with the idle speed the first day) So then i gave a quick roll on the throttle and it reved up just fine but then dropped down to about 500 RPMs and then it would slowly come back up.

I tried riding it just down the street and back and it seems like if im on the throttle it runs normally.

I have no idea whats wrong. Please help!

make sure this part of your harness is hooked up..dont if that could be the problem, but this almost same thing happened to me and i just forgot to plug this back in...ignore the other little yellow circle around the hole at the bottom.

It has been cold lately but i always let my bike warm up before i ride it.

In that picture is that the right side of the bike? (when sitting on it)

Yeah, you'll have to prop the gas tank up a bit to see it.

just lift it and rest it on something off to the left..(forgot it was this hard to get to) my bike has been bare for the winter..so i didnt have to take anything off to see it.

Map Sensor....Check the plug....=-)

Also, IF the bikie sat up for an extended period of time. I would change the oil, drain gas and put new gas in it......Be surprised what can go bad when it sits up...=-)

Ok well i have been at work all day and i will start checking these things tomorow. I have found the plug that was in that picture. I can see that it is connected but i have not got the gas tank off yet so that i can check and make sure it is connected well.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "sitting up" but if you are talking about me not driving it much then.....I ride every day. Even when it was 20 outside i have been riding it at least to school and back

Ok i just got it all taken apart...i checked both the map sensor and whatever that electrical connection is in the picture

It is incredibly stange what is doing.....the FI light does not blink anymore.....but it still idles funny. sometimes it will be just fine and then ill rev the engine and then it starts idling so slow i think its going to die....this is really driving me crazy

it's the throttle position sensor. this may come a little late and i'm not sure about it either, but you may have been able to check it without removing the tank by looking at it from the underneath somehow.

I have no idea what or where that is

Also i just took off my air filter and started it up without the air filter on there but my filter has some black stuff over on the left side of it. Could that be a problem.

o ok....well i checked that and it is connected good.....is it possible that i need a new throttle response sensor or a MAP sensor? Is there i way i can test to see if they are bad?

Also keep in mind that im a daily rider and it was working perfectly one day and then i was having these problems the next.

Thanks for all the help guys

well i fixed it finally...after 7 hours of working/reading. It was the map sensor after all.....all i did was disconnect it and blow it out with some compressed air and everything worked perfectly again.....i live in a really windy and dusty place so i guess it makes sense

thanks for all the help guys!
