It's not an O2 sensor, is it?

On my 2006 F4i there is a cable/wire that attaches to an 'object' right where the pipe slips on to the collector, looks like a sensor but I don't think it is, or is it? I've seen older F4is that didn't have it, but mine does.

I am contemplating a new slip-on, but I'd like to know what this thing really does before I go any further. Is it something that should screw into the next exhaust or is it just there to quiet things down? Does it make sense to go through the trouble of making sure it is in place in the next exhaust.

Thanks

Mine is a CA model. It had one, but I'm not sure if the new ones do, or if they still have them in the CA model.

Is this what you're talking about?

Yup, that is it.

I assume that the sensor is important or else it wouldn't be there. Do people weld in bungs (if so, what are thread dimensions if anyone knows) or do they let the ecu run the motor rich/lean or is a power commander definitely needed?

BTW this not a California model if it matters.

Don't know about bike engines, but I know that you can live without it on a fuel injected car.

The O2 sensors are there to fine tune the FI. It's part of the system that monitors the exhaust for rich or lean and sends a signal to the ECM (computer/brain) and FI system. The FI is designed to automatically adjust itself within reason.

on the F4i, the only time the O2 sensor signals and the ECU actually acts is during cruising RPMs and speeds. it tells the ECU what the a/f is at the pipe and then the ECU leans out the mixture based on readings from your RPM and speed. If it's constant, the ECU thinks you're cruising, like on highway, and then leans your bike out...you don't need to run a rich mixture or even ideal mixture when you're just cruising and very little load on the motor.

this is the only time it does this, all other time it's on a predetermined fuel map.
if you get rid of it you'll need to get an o2 simulator. i suggest leaving it in, it does not hurt performance whatsoever, but does increase gas mileage for highway riding.
plus that thing is like over 100 bucks mang!

just get a pipe for CA models, or weld a bun on there. take the sucker off, take it to the store and find a nut that fits it, then take your midpipe, drill a hole in it, weld the nut on and you gots a bun!

Damn Tahoe... I didn't know you were that smart, that's a kick ass plan.

I'm with Tahoe.

I tend to cruise, plus I like how the bike runs now so I'm going with the O2 sensor. I agree that the motor won't destroy itself without it, but there definitely should be a good reason why it is there.

Thanks to everyone for all the input.

shhh...don't tell anyone...it's not smart, it's CHEAP@$$...hahahah...

i have an 02 simulator...my bike doesn't do so well on the highway anymore....overall MPG is 31...

akra f/s, dyno tuned, -1 up front...before the f/s was in the 40s. after f/s and O2 simulator, 33-35, after -1 up front...31...gas just went up in price here...
