What is the best way to put on new grips?

Razor knife the old ones off. Clean clip-on of residule glue, etc with cleaning solvent of your liking. Spay aerosol
firm hold hair spay in side grip and twist on - allow drying, sans riding
. You could also use RVT silicone instead of hair spray. You think I'm kidding about the hair spray - wrong. It holds and it's inexspensive, esp. if you/your wife-girlfriend/your mother already has a can of the stuff lying about

Honestly, I've appied new grips this way for many, many years with no ill effects.

Solvents: gas, WD-40, white gas, etc.
Wipe clean. Remove any residue with H2O. Allow to dry.
