dont know how loud they usually are (first bike) but is it normal for the clutch to make a rattleing kind of noise when you are in nuetral with the clutch engaged ( like not touching the lever at all). thanks, just a curious question, trying to figure out if something is wearing. thanks guys! :)

yeah it could be noisy. but it could also be a noisy cam chain.

cam chain is fine, just had the head off and checked. and it only happens when I let the clutch out. if I pull the clutch in it is gone and perfectly quiet. thanks!

Believe it or not, you probably just need to synchronize your carburetors. My 1000 had a nasty rattle at idle with the bike in neutral, and after I synched the carbs, it went almost completely away. The uneven idle of carbs out of synch causes the clutch plates to rattle in the basket, and you can only feel it at idle with the clutch out. Try that before jumping to any other conclusions. Easy to do and if you do your own maintenence, you should have a dececnt set of synch gauges anyway. It will make your bike run better too.

cbreric, I'm glad you brought this topic up. My 89 does the same thing.

glad I could help others lol :) I will be getting or borrowing a carb sync tool and trying it. might clean up the low end stutter a little as well. not real bad, just a bit off it seems until I get to like 3-4k rpm
