Oil Change Question...

What's up guys, I'm new to the forum and have a question. I just purchased an '87 600F and was wondering what kind of oil I should use when changing and where is the oil filter?...she has around 20K miles if i'm not mistaken. Got a good deal, motor is very healthy....she just needs a little cosmetic work which i will be taking care of soon.

Oil filter is at the front of the bike behind the headers. Oil drain plug is on the bottom of the bike on the left hand side under the left side panel. Use either 10w40 or 20w50 about 3.5 quarts.

  I run 10/30 Mobile full synthetic and it works good.  Pick a good synthetic and have a day with it.

One more tip on the oil change.  Get some tin foil and rap your two inner header pipes, so when you remove the filter it will hit the foil and keep your pipes clean.

so you don't have to use a motorcycle type oil? i can use regular oil i use for my car??

Yup Oil is Oil, at least the quality stuff. Mobil 1 full synthetic is the best right now, but I had problems with my clutch slipping when I went synthetic, so back to organic oils for me.
Another thing you can do when changing oil about once a year is to drain the oil, fill the bike with either mineral oil or diesel fuel to the 3.5 quarts, fire it up and run it for about 30 seconds at around idle to 2500rpm. Drain the sludge and toss the filter, then all new oil and filter. It will even clean the carbon build up on the rings, basically a bath for the motor. Don't do it too often however, more like once every year or two. Old school mechanic trick to clean out the sludge. You might want to pull the oil pan if you are always getting nasty oil when you change it, and clean and soaking it to help out after this trick.

Motorcycles need oil developed to work with the wet clutch.
 
Automotive oil is not designed to work with a wet clutch system and it does not have the additives to prevent clutch slippage/wear and could cause the clutch plates to die or fail due to the type of oil.
 
Motorcycle oil is not cheap, I have used synthetic oil in my bikes for years, either honda brand or Amzoil.
 
Mobile One does sell a motorcycle oil that the Goldwing riders swear buy, it's good stuff, just hard to find.

if you layer it up a few so its kind of sturdy, the put a crease in the middle to funnel the liquids to the center and angle it to the left or right of the bike you can direct it to a pan beside the bike, that way you dont get any spills at all.
