oil level

You are supposed to check the oil level when it is running and hot right? Or just hot? I am having the hardest time for some reason getting just the right amount in. I always knew honda did things wierd but 3.1 quarts come on. Y not just 3. Any tips. THanks

Sitting level and not running. You can run it, but let it sit for a minute.
