It's actually not that hard. You just have to make sure that you line up the tape perfectly on the edge of the painted section. This is where the most time is spent so make sure your mind is set to "patient". You have to use about 2-3 inch sections of the tape. If it's too long, then the tape will not sit flush with the edge due to the curve of the rim. After that, just follow the procedure with the stripper and the sanding (I used medium steel wool). But the tape will do the job of keeping that line perfect as long as you take the time to line up each 2-3 inch piece. Also, be sure to overlap them by about 1/4-1/2 inch.

True, it wont rust. Also you don't have to clean them with the metal polish every time.  You can clean them the same way you clean your bike. I use the cleaner sold at the Honda dealership. Just use the polish every once in a while, unless you just want to polish them every time.

Ripper, it kind of sucks.
It's very dirty and time consuming, but it get me out of the house and away from the old lady so that's a plus!

Just kidding, it is a dirty job, wear a dust mask and eye protection when sanding and the time flys by.

First I stripped the rim clean with automotive paint remover and washed rim.  (you don't want to inhale the dried paint stripper when sanding.....)

Then I mounted the rim in a vice and ground down the casting marks inside of each spoke using a die grinder with a cutting bit.

Then I used the die grinder again with a 120 grit sanding disc over the entire rim to cut down the rough casting bumbs to a smooth but rough finish that lined each spoke/hub inside and out.

I then fired up the dremel using the flexable extension and 120 wet sand paper and hit the nooks and crannies to smooth out the places the die grinder was to big to get into.

And then repeated the last step only going to finer wet sand papers each time 120-240-600-1200 grit and then going over the entire rim using the dremel and scotch brite pads cut into discs.

Right now I am just about finished polishing the from rim, I am on the 600 grit paper now, so I have a little more to go before I post pics.

Good luck.. john

Well SIRR1 i think i'll pass on going all the way with mine i thought it would be hard but damn that seems like alot of work!! any way good luck also if you have'nt tried these they work great.... it's a polishing compound stick made by MIBRO #6 high gloss polishing compound I got mine at lowes, works awesome, just apply compound to a 4 inch buffing wheel for your drill ( preferably one with a cord to avoid battery drain)  with the drill running apply untill wheel changes color then apply to rim finished product is beautiful.

If you want the polish but don't want to do it.... Send a tape to Dirty Jobs and Mike Rowe can come and do it for you ;) Just get a couple of your friends bikes, and make a sign so it looks like its a shop that does it. Then you can sit back and watch Mike polish all the bikes

Damn brother! You DID that.  That's gonna look good when you get done. Very original, instead of the "too flashy" chrome look. I like it.

Looks like we got another member!

Once you get the rim polished the way you like, clean the rim with isopropyl alcolhol ($0.99 at CVS) and let air dry.

Then coat the rim with a clear spray paint and you won't have to clean the bare aluminum each time you wash your bike.

So you just stripped the rim down to the chrome? Is that how you got them so shiny?

to everyone with chrome or polished rims..
as soon as you finish cleaning off the buffing compound take you rims to get powdercoated w/clear should cost around 50+ per wheel youll save time from cleaning the chrome or getting mineral deposits of the polished aluminum..

Does anyone have the original thread on the complete process?

I remember reading it a few months ago, but couldn't find it today.

Thanks!
