I just bought a new honda cbr 600 2008, Ive been riding for a week now and today when i turned it off after coming home from school, a fan kicked on which i think is a cooling fan, is that normal? How hot do engines usual run at?

Your normal running temp should be anyway between 173degrees - 200degrees. Cooling fan kicks on around 215-217, I believe and your bike shouldn't get hotter then 230degrees.
Congrats! on the new bike purchase.

My bike in an 07, and it usually runs in the mid 170 degree range. The fan relay is controlled by the ECM, so it is possible for it to run whenever needed.

Exactly!, I did not go into detail because the ignition(sp) could be on still but the engine could be shutdown. Which is completely fine. More details the better.

Mine has come on many times after the engine is off.

Does he mean off (as in kill switch off, but ignition turned to on) or does he mean he took the key out and the fan still kicked in?
Even if the engine is off, and the ignition is on, the fan will still kick in when needed.

No i took the key out completely and it ran for about 5 minutes until it hit like 210 i think and turned off. But yeah the key was out and off. But i spoke with a tech at a shop and he said it was perfectly normal and that ignition on or off has nothing to do with it so its alllll goood. Thanks for the replies fellas.

well it's a 08 maybe they did that to the ecm/fan to cool things down

Maybe like a turbo timer type set up your saying?

Hmm thats strange. On my 07, if i hit the kill switch to turn the bike off, the fan stops but if I turn the kill switch back on the fan will start up again with the engine still off (but the key still to the on position)... like blue fox said. Thats really strange that the fan is running without the key even in, are you sure??

Yea its a totally stock 08 so im sure they changed somthing so now the key can be out and the bike off and the fan still runs.

it's just a fan and it's helping the bike cool down, dont worry about it. basically like a turbo timer
