All right kid I mean Squid (to the UK residents in the USA we call it Splitting lanes) Going between traffic was legalized due to the fact that older model bikes would not cool down unless the were moving that is why we are allowed to do it. To the guy with the line problem 1 check your tire pressure. I was a squid once too we all were thats how we learned 2 when splittn lanes look at the tires of the cars they will tell you the autos intended directon 3 Never go too fast I speak from experience, california drivers trust me they suck. nothing worse then a driver who changes lanes then looks. 4 Finally painted lines are the enemy esp. when wet Heres the list i go through when forced to ride in the rain (Feel free to add something i missed) Paintedlines, Manhole covers, Potholes, Edges of road where debri collects, Oil spots, Puddles, and rain water run off you know that moving puddle ahead remember 1 in of moving water can move a car
Good luck man hopefully you dont learn the hard way

Lane splitting scares the heck out of me, but I still do it occaisionally. The traffic has to be stopped or nearly stopped so that the cars are all bunched up making it difficult for cars to change lanes. With nasty traffic getting worse by the day here in NorCal, lane splitting becomes easier. They keep building tens of thousands of homes and doing absolutely nothing to improve the roads and infrastructure. More traffic delays, more lane splitting. We also get really hot days (many days in a row that exceed 100+ in the summer) so having some air flow while riding keeps me from getting cooked (I always ride with gear, no matter what).
I do get a kick out of splitting past a cop in a cage stuck in traffic! Just be diligent. Watch out for the numbskulls talking on their cell phones, smoking a cigarette, drinking coffee, putting on make up and yelling at the kids in the back seat...all at the same time.
Be safe.

There used to be a typical numb nuts sign painted on the road near to where I used to live.
Big sign just before the bends, can you guess wot it said? yep "Slippery when wet".......
The reason for (at the very least) in riding on painted surfaces, is that their slippery, and even worse some are raised (& slippery).

How can I find out of lane-splitting is legal in my state (TN)? I do it only when traffic is stopped, and I always have my horn covered. I haven't had any issues with sliding on the paint... I try to ride just to the left or right of it.

I am wondering how can lane splitting be illegal, sort of defeats the object of going to work by bike.

+1
In SoCal it really cuts down on my travel time. Besides, I lane split so that I can give the cars that extra 6 feet of road. Anyone who lives in Socal will tell you that you'll
make a persons day when you let them move forward 6 feet while in bumper to bumper traffic. It is kind of like giving an elderly person your seat on the bus. It'll
bring a tear to their eye.
On hot days it would suck to sit in traffic in leathers and sweat your a$$ off. I can understand why some people are against it; it's not legal where they ride. I don't recall
ever seeing anyone splitting lanes in an unsafe manner. I don't consider it unsafe but I do feel my senses are all focused on the cars around me. I don't EVER think about
anything other than what could happen. I don't even think about what is for dinner while splitting lanes.
There are days when I don't do it. Especially when I am just out enjoying the ride.
Be safe and and ride free... I wish it was legal everywhere.
BACK TO THE ORIGINAL QUESTION. If you hit the painted line to the right of left of the high point then it'll pull a little to the right or left. I notice it more at slower speeds.

yeah when I am lane splitting (filtering). Your right x2madf4i, all that on your mind is cars cars cars. What is that car doing? what is that truck doing? I need to get into that lane. Is my road positioning ok. Any fellow riders behind me? and of course stay as less time as possible off the white lines. Its intense, but when you made it home after work and open a can of beer, I feel good that I made it home in one peice.
