this is actually a mixed-feeling subject for me. i have a scotts rotary damper on my dirtbike and it works great. does everything that i wanted it to do. but i had an ohlins piston damper on my previous bike. and man was that thing awesome. never a problem. i am currently looking to purchase a new damper but i haven't decided which to buy yet but i voted for piston style because of the experience with the ohlins. if it wasn't so damn expensive then i think that everyone would have one.

i have rotary...scotts cause it's good and reliable. for piston style, i will only go with ohlins cause they hardcore.
some say that the pistons style break after a hard headshake...others say they haven't under such circumstances.
as for rotary, you can switch from bike to bike, just need to change the mount...so that's something to consider.
