well this is my first write up and i still need to finish it, but i''ll post up the rest later. first i took a long look at the bike to get my ideas straight.
http://www.sharenow.com/base/content/12455/

unbolt the exhaust can, mine had three bolts
http://www.sharenow.com/base/content/12456/

remove the can (i like the look without)
http://www.sharenow.com/base/content/12457/

grind the rivets off to remove the cap (if yours have rivets)
http://www.sharenow.com/base/content/12459/

measure the can for your desired length. take a piece of paper or magazine spine and bend it around the can to get a straight line
marking. then mark your line around the can. rotate the can 3 inches at a time measuring each time to make sure your line is straight.

make sure to stay away from useless tools like the ones that got me stuck this weekend
http://www.sharenow.com/base/content/12460/

so this is how i rode it to work today and i will post the rest of the pics when i am finished

looks good but have u considered back pressure, if u havent ur goign to jack up ur motor

honestly low back pressue isnt really a big deal on these motors, i think he will be fine

Can you also use a drill, to take the rivets off?
Or you have to grind them off?

This coming weekend I''m planning to shortened my Hindle
Or if I have any time.

Why does it not effect these motors?

Let''s get to the cutt''n part...

1) yes you can drill them out
2) i am running the bike right now with no exhaust so not worried about back pressure
3) gettin to the cuttin this weekend i work long hours

I have my exhaust drilled out but my temperature is much higher then it was before. Are you facing the same problems with have the whole exhaust removed?

But at the same time I didn''t have my exhaust drilled last summer so I am not to sure. The reason I bring this up is because my friend and I have the same bike and when we sit in traffic I am always 10 degrees hotter.

Yes our bikes will run with low/no backpressure. I ran my F4i all last season w/o any packing in a D&D cut down. Sounded like firecrackers in a tin can...not my favorite by any means.

This month I took the can apart and threw some packing in there to little avail on quieting it down, so I started stuffing steel wool in the center. Started ideling better and sounded much better...very public tolerable. Once I took it out, I had tons more bottom end power and am not turning back.

You can run with no backpressure, but your just shooting yourself in the foot because of how much low end power your just throwing out...not to mention that you can wake the dead and make out sportbike culture look even worse that it already does.

i am running the exhaust from the headers to the mid pipe. i meant i''m not running a can at all right now.

Still in the dark

gotcha covered bro
from where i last left off i had measured the can out for the cut so i''ll start here with the cut

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0005CLFEFK.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0006ta8pV1.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE00087_7ADR.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0010tUImb0.JPG

now this is a must have

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE00093gcghw.JPG

so after the can was cut we had to measure and get the right cut on the core

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0013Y6w6wm.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0014lAx1KJ.MOV

now we took a file to make our first marking

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0017KfXfWg.JPG

then we went back over it with white out so it can be seen better while cutting

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0020IOYAMr.JPG

after cutting the core i wrapped it in steel wool to reduce the noise and as repacking cause the packing ws shot

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0032n0kvs4.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0033R7Av8d.JPG

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0034KithND.JPG

i put in a layer of silicone on the can cap (sorry no pic) then drilled the wholes for the pop rivets (you can use screws)

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0028QRAkhe.JPG

(sorry no pic of the pop riveting either, got carried away in the work)
figured since i already siliconed the cap why not make it air tight. so i pulled off the mid pipe and put a layer on there where it goes
over the header pipe tip

http://www.sharenow.com/gmedia/content/cbrf3/FILE0036waW7KP.JPG

and the finished project looks like this

what i do recomend is being very sure that you have all the tools for the job.

I have a Hindle exhaust.
Will it be a fairly similar steps, of cutting it apart.
What kind of silicone and brand did you use?
rider0033
7/3/2008 5:16:16 PM
yeah, the brand doesnt make the job ant hardy. just measure and take your time

Nice work. I like the final product! I can''t wait until I can get a slip-on for mine. The stock can is hideous and silent!

lol not sayign anything bad about doing this but no backpressure on ur motor will burn ur valves, you will understand when u have to rebuild ur motor but if you dont understand what your talking about plz dont tell other people that it will not effect there motors. yes are engines can run with little to no back pressure but its not made to and will effect your motor in the long run. You can make a shorty exhaust if done properly with the proper baffling in it and not effect ur motor and still ge tthe same power output.

Lower backpressure = higher flow of air through your engine = leaner mix. I think you can probably tune your carbs/efi to run properly with low back pressure but it will need adjusting.
