Whats the deal with motorcycle speedos? I am almost sure after about 55 it loses true speed. I live in cali with a speed limit of 65. Sometimes on my way home from work in semi-busy traffic I will be cruising in the CP lane and look down to see I am doing 90. I will look over and see grandma going the same speed in her 79 civic. This is my 3rd bike and it seems that higher speeds do not keep true record.

What do you think? Am I blowing smoke up my ass?

If you're running stock gearing the speedo should read within 7%. So if it's showing 90mph then you're prolly doing 84mph at least. I've noticed that the way I'm perched on the 1000RR makes my speed deceptive. Lots of times I've looked down to find I'm going a lot faster than I thought. Haven't GPS'd it yet but I have measured it by mile markers and after 20 miles I only gained 1/10 of a mile.

Another speed corrector is the yellow box from Black Robotics. About the same price as the other except they're outta Australia instead of Hungary. If you can get 3 peeps to buy the yellow box the price is only $92 + $15 shipping. That equals $97 to your door.

I GPS'd mine today for my 286.1 mile round trip ride!! When my Speedo was reading 80, the GPS was saying 75.6 and it was consistently reading about 3-5 MPH higher than I was actually going at all legal/semi legal speeds, 112 on the speedo was 104.5 ( according to the GPS) I have stock gearing and have Michelin Pilot Powers in the stock sizes mounted

There ya go -- 7% off. I think it's a plot -- to make us think we're going faster than we actually are. Bastards!

My 929 had about 4% error on the stock speedo then when I went to a larger sprocket the error rose to +10%. Here's what I used on my 929 to correct the problem. http://www.cccyclery.com/sigmasp.html
For no more than $25 you get a bicycle speedo (any of these models will work) that goes up to 300km or about 180mph. You can put in an initial calibration based on wheel circumference and everything will be fine. I wanted to squeeze more accuracy out of it so calibrated it after a ride over several mile markers long. Besides speed, the unit gives miles directly (and a whole bunch of other stuff) so with a little arithmetic you can adjust calibration easily and precisely. If you don't want to do any arithmetic you can just keep keying in a new calibration number until the distance, hence the speed, comes out right. Obviously you could use a GPS but it may not work out as accurately for certain practical reasons.
As a bonus feature the speedo can be quickly switched between 2 vehicles as I do (another motorcycle or bicycle) because it has provision for 2 wheel sizes built into the software. For the second vehicle you have to buy an additional sender/mount , though.

I have one of those -- fairly accurate unit but not as accurate as GPS. The switchability to another unit (be it bicycle or another motorcycle) is a plus. The absolute only thing I didn't like about it is that at night mine didn't have a light. At the time they sold what I can only describe as a desk style light that looked hokey as shit. I'd just wait until I passed someone and use their headlights to read the unit. Once I got the GPS I just let my kids have the Sigma for their bicycles -- GPS is da bomb but is significantly more $$$ than the Sigma.

That's funny -- they were discussing which one was gonna get the Jeep and who was gonna get the bike when I die -- I interrupted their conversation and told 'em I was leaving it all to charity. Man, that was funny.
