I am going to give my bike an oil change
This will be the first time I have done this myself on this bike
Do I have to remove any thing, like the fairing to get to the sump and oil filter and what tools do I need

Be careful to not overtight the oil plug, the torque is less than most people would beleive, only 30 Nm/ 22 ft-lb. A new oil plug washer now and then will improve sealing and prevent thread stripping.

I alsways remove the lower fairings at oil change to check for any leaks or if things begins to come loose. That might not be neccesary if you can get access to the oil filter with the fairings on, you will see yourself when changing the filter which is located in the lower front of engine. I almost sure I've changed the filter once with all fairings in place, but would not take poison on it. The oil plug is definitly accessible without removing anything.

To remove the oil filter, I use a cheap tool for car oil filters, I've shortened the loop to fit the small diameter Honda-filter.

I remove the right-side fairing. After the hex-head bolts, don't forget the three pull pins on the flimsy cross straps. Also, the lower edge of the fairing slides forward where the slide coupling meet. The oil drain bolt is 17 or 19mm. I tighten a screw clamp around the oil filter and use a hammer and punch on the screw of the screw clamp to loosen it. The drain plug is magnetic, so clean the tip good.

I don´t remove anything.
Both the drain plug and the filter is accesable without removing the fairing.
Don´t thighten the plug or the filter too hard.
Also remember that the oil should be warm when you drain it.
(No need to be boiling hot though)

Done it. a bit messy,

The 17mm sump bolt was tight, the spanner wouldn’t shift it, so I browed a socket with a 600mm arm, an over kill tool, but still was a little tight to get off, even with that. When I put it back in, I easy used half the strength.

Should the sump bolt have a washer?
Also, the sump bolt dimple was full of slug, do you thing I should change the oil a little sooner next time, I plan to do it every 5,000k’s but not sure if the shop did the job last time.

The oil filter came off fine, but made a bit of an unexpected mess.
I too have the tool as pictured by R1000, unmodified, it useless, so I brought this for $6 from SuperCheap Auto’s, works well in a confined space, and no modification necessary

Bike runs a little better, next time, I will get a funnel, degreaser and more newspapers
