Does syncing the carbs only affect idle and low throttle or does it affect the bike performance as a whole?

nice writeup... if you had spare nipples, wouldn't it be possible to just leave them in and cap them? would make future sychs a little easier.. you could go as far as leaving a length of vacuum tubing attatched to them, capped off..

I was thinking of that. Leaving a bit of hose hanging with a nipple on the end to attach the gauges too. Now that I've done it once it won;t be nearly as hard the next time. Really it probably only needs to be done once, or maybe twice a year if you are really so inclined.

MarkR,
It affects mostly the idle curcuit, but since even going down the road at even throttle, much of the time you are still on or close to the idle curcuit (that is the throttle plates are nearly closed) so it will affect throttle transition from closed to open. Makes getting on the throttle smoother, and helps with the "on/off switch" type throttle response. More progressive.

I'm just noticing my Katana has VERY poor engine brakes, could syching the carbs be a part of the problem here? IE, one throttle plate further open, causing one cylinder to never acually brake???

I don't think that a carb sync would effect engine braking much at all. Possibly a valve adjustment would. You might also want to do a compression test to see if there is something else going on there. Actually engine braking can be evil. That's why slipper clutches are popular with the sportbikes. No engine braking and lockup of the rear tire if you happen to chop the throttle mid corner.

I like engine braking.. since by using the engine brakes, yes, your rear wheel may skid alittle, but it will always still be moving, witht he brake itself, you can actually lock it, which is worse IMHO, I'm quite used to the engine braking on the hurricane now, and I love it.. currently doing a sych on the katana to get it to idle better

I was thinking about buying a Katana before I brought the Hurricane

How does the Katana compare against the Hurricane

well, it's quick, I will say that, top speed is less, (225 kph vs about 260 both with stock gearing), it doens't have the bottom end torque the hurricane does, and despite the brakes on mine (89) are twin floating disc, dual opposed piston calipers, with stainless steel brake lines, they just don't feel as good.. I find I get much more engine vibration, this engine doens't have a balancer shaft, the seat isn't as good, it's slippery I find. the front forks don't seem to be worth a rats ass, they don't dampen enough by far, coming down off a wheelie, they'll bottom out every time (no air suspension) even with the dampening set to maximum, and new 15W fork oil. honestly, I find it feels cheaply built.. yes, it's about 90 lbs lighter, and feels lighter than that, but the hurricane is just much more confidence inspiring, it feels like the tires are always going to be firmly planted on the road, and I dont' mind the weight, it makes for a very much smoother ride.. of course, to be able to give you a better review of the katana, i'd have to drive one that I know is in shipshape... then again, my hurricane is pretty beat up and seems to be doing much better

one thing more about the katana's brakes... i'm used to the EBC "hh" pads on the hurricane, and don't know what pads are in the katana.. so that could be SOME of the differance

hope I've been objective here

I was keen on the Katana, I like it's fairing and the money wasn’t too bad
It was a little small and I really wanted at least a 1 litre engine, I also wanted to double and I wanted a fat ass seat to put my butt on.

So, which is quicker

quicker or faster?, if you want to snap the throttle and do a wheelie, you know as well as I do the hurricane won't, it'll just settle down and book it, the katana will lift the front wheel... 1/4 mile times? probably close, with the hurricane taking it near the end.. if you're going to go for a long ride, and double, I'd take the hurricane anyday, you won't have to downshift for the hills, and you're not going to be totally numb after the ride, the katana may be a little more capable on a track day, but I think you'd want to put a steering damper on it

I'll trade you the katana for the hurricane ;)
