i've had my '00 F4 for about 2 or 3 weeks now and im starting to hear a strange noise. i can only hear it when someone else is driving the bike, my dad said he could faintly hear it when he was on it. it happens when you start from a stop and are accelerating through first, this tinkling/rattling sound comes out. the best way id describe it is like placing a small nut or bolt in an aluminum can and shaking it around. does anyone have an idea as to what this could be or how to fix it? thanks!

Hey,
It could be alot of things:
Low on oil
loose parts/fairing
bad rear shock/strut
any bearing
Engine somewhere needs adjustment

Like everyone always tells me, KISS (keep it simple stupid)
do the easiest first, check the oil then go from there. Sorry I can give more spacific help, but I am not that long into
these bikes and havent delt with alot of this stuff. Good luck!

The only way I could see the chain making that noise is if it was extremely loose, hitting agains the chain guard. I am not even sure if your bike has a metal chain guard. If you think its that, spray some WD-40 on that puppy and see if it goes away, Im betting it wont. Good luck!

It sounds like a cam chain tensioner.

I will second the idea about the camchain tensioner..they are known for failures in CBR600's

I have the same problem with my 02 f4i. Right at about 5500RPM up to about 6200RPM i get this weird rattling noise. Its perfectly fine in lower and higher revs, but it kind of confuses me. I only have 4200 Miles on the bike and i dont think it should be doing this.

Give the chain a good cleaning and lube, that should help with the chain rattle quite abit.

I have a 2000 929 and I get a wierd rattling sound right about 4800 to 5500 rpm, then its gone. The lower and upper rpms work and sound great. Any ideas? Its not the chain or any loose nuts and bolts ( I checked them all thoroughly).

I myself have no idea what it is. My problem is definetly in engine related though. I can hear it coming from both sides of the bike when i lean down to listen. Im taking it in (as soon as I get my cars transmission overhauled) to the dealership to see what they say. I'll post more when I get it back from them.

At certain RPM's you may notice a vibration only to have it go away with a couple 100 more RPMs. These are normal for most bikes and are harmonic in nature. There's absolutely nothing a dealer can do for you except take your money. Remember, these bikes can all be taken to a track and thrashed and perform all day long -- unlike 95% of cars on the road that are built for comfort. I'd only take the bike to be checked out if you notice a noise that you know isn't right or the vibration gets worse with speed or higher RPMs.

how can i fix this camchain tensioner?

It needs to be replaced, either with the O.E.M. one or an aftermarket manual camchain tensioner. I would reccomend the aftermarket one, the Honda ones seem to keep failing over and over again. We can get you on here at Apex for only around $40 for most manual tensioners
