ok, ive put about 300 miles on the bike since ive bought it, and the bike has 4400 origional miles on her. i love the bike, absolutely love it.

i have a few questions tho. what rpm do i shift at during joy rides and for getting on it? it looks like redline is 13500. also, when upshifting from 1st to 2nd if i shift at 7500+rpm it shifts kinda hard, but if i shift below 7000 it shifts smoother. is this normal? up shifting from 2nd and on is nice and smooth and no probs down shifting either. ive never brought the rpms past 9000 yet, all in good time. im cruising around town, posted speed limit is 45, im in 3rd gear and the rpms are at about 6000. is this safe/good to ride in 3rd at 6k or should i be in 4th? and when riding, what shopuld the rpms be at? other than that, im getting to know the bike every mile and getting more comfortable riding it. im not having to look at the gauges to see what rpm in at, what speed im going, just looking forward and keeping my eyes aware of everything around me.

i am doing a full oil change (ams oil) w/filter (honda filter), coolant change (honda blue), air filter change (oem), plug change (ngk) and brake fluid change (ATE super blue dot4).

thanks alot guys for the help

dave

6th gear at 13,500 should be maxed out on the speedo (around 175mph), right? not just yet, and maby not ever. but i have been 110 on the freeway (wide open straight away and no one around). and that WAS plenty fast for me atm.

ive asked a few of my friends who have gsxr1000's and an r1, they said they dont know, as they dont look at the gauges. lol

To get that bike to go 175, you're gonna have to push it out of an airplane or tie it to a top fuel dragster. Maybe on paper, but it wont see an actual 150, MAYBE down hill with a slight tail wind. As far as shifting, depends on how much noise you wanna make and how quick you need to accelerate. If you wanna get on with it, shift at redline. If you are just toodling, sometimes I shift as low as 2500. All depends. Usually I click a gear at around 35-4000. Obviously the harder you want to accelerate, the higher the RPM will be when you shift. On a bike like yours with little to no low end torque, it's probably best (in traffic) to run around 45-5000rpm so you have some steam to move if you need it in a pinch. Otherwise for out on the highway cruising, click her into 6th and enjoy.

your wrong gixxereater, my bike has been 152 on the interstate and i have a different sprocket on the back geared for a quicker start off the line so i lost some top speed and my bike was still doin 152. Now 175... i dont know about that

ok, now what about the hard shifts from 1st to 2nd at higher rpm's? is that somewhat normal, or will an iol change possibly lessen it?

thanks for the help guys :)

Exactly spud. If you regear it, the speedo is off even more than it was to begin with. It's reading HIGH. Notice I said "actual". Your speedo may even read 165, but unless you're spraying or huffing, I it's not actually doing that. And adding teeth to the rear, or removing from the front only exagerates the problem. Unless your speedo is run off the front wheel, but I would guess these are new enough they are off the countershaft. Again, a speedohealer will fix the inaccuracy too. Oops I was wrong, they will do an actual 155.

But regearing it still makes the speedo way off.

I am behind spud, I sold him the bike and I know what it will do, I had it for a year and drove it pretty hard at times. The rear sprocket was changed and I believe it is jetted. It's about 10 mph off and it was reading 162 whel I let off. Granted it was pegged for a long time and it def. didn't want to go any faster the actual MPH was 152.

I have a stock bike except for a yoshi pipe and I was doing 140 in 5th gear @ 11000 rpms, so i think it will easily see 155 160. I run it a 5500-6000rpm then shift it shifts pretty smooth for me and I still have the torque i need.

i have a 98 f3. ive hit 157ish (between 155 and 160) but after around 140 the power slowly died down. i think its possible to hit 175 but you may have to be on a down hill. i was on a pretty flat straight piece of highway. i think i could have gone faster but i didnt wanna try.

I good cruising rpm is around 5000-6000 rpm or even higher if you would like. I don't like cruising below that for many reasons. First off the bike will be to quite and I like people to hear me. Second, it has no power below that point. Third, riding below that rpm will actual give you worse gas mileage (I know it sounds funny but its true.) Forth... a little throttle and you are pulling a wheelie!
