Girl on '93 1000F - It's too tall!

cocohibb -> Girl on '93 1000F - It's too tall! (6/28/2006 12:08:41 PM)

Just bought '93 1000F yesterday (prior bike Kaw ex500r) - thought height/weight issue wouldn't be such a problem - but then I got a good idea of the power this bike has... now a little more cautious/respectful of what this bike is all about...

So - my current dilemma is - how do I lower this bike? I welcome ALL suggestions. I am not on tip toe, but just about. Can rest balls of feet on ground, and that's it - enough to stop and hold the bike, but I don't feel comfortable stopping short/hard. Figure I need to drop bike as much as possible - 2-3" at least. Friend suggested cutting seat down, raising forks in tripple trees - are there any aftermarket lowering kits for this bike? Suggestions?

Appreciate all your help! Love this forum! Thanks!

Welcome, hang out long enough and you will get all the info you need on lowering links for your bike, but not from me sorry, Iam 6' and never had that problem with my 93 F-2 good luck and again welcome [:)]

I would do the seat first, before messing with the suspension. Carefully take out the staples under the seat and take off the vinyl. An electric carving knife works good for cutting down the foam. Then stretch the vinyl back and use a staple gun to attach the vinyl.

You might check out aftermarket seats. The Corbin Gunfighter & Lady, which I have on mine, seems to be about two inches lower than stock. It's also quite comfortable.

Wow a chick on a cbr1k.. I do not think you need to lower it .. Ride the bike if you are truly just on the balls of your feet that should be fine. That is all I put down when I stop. I can sit flat footed but just use the balls of my feet. If you need to cut the seat first. I do not think there are lowering dog bones for the bike and if you change the triple tree without lowering the back you might mess up the handling of the bike.

My suggestion is to ride the bike and get use to it. You might deiced you do not need to lower it after you are use to it.

How tall are you?

I would adjust the back shock first, the previous owner may have been tall, When you work out what height you want, then work the seat

Hi,

The rear shock from an early model(pre 1989)will lower the bike by quite a bit!I`m not sure exactly how much,but I`ve seen one done and It looked about 2-3 inches lower!! You`ll have to drop the front to suit also.

Wot he said.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

You can lower the front by 10mm by dropping the forks.

There is a lot of foam on the seat so that can be cut down or you can buy a Corbin (I see one on ebay every month or so)

Set the preload on the rear to zero and if all that doesn't work go for the 89 model shock.

Cheers
Rob

I'd get sliders asap, if you can't reach the ground confidently, it's only a matter of time before you slip in the garage and watch all your beautiful fairing eat concrete...

Or you could get wheels that lower and raise when you are doing under 5kph, I've heard of people with Goldwings who do that.

I hope this bike isn't your daily driver, sounds like it'll be a pain for you to ride thorugh traffic lights in the city.

For starters I'd start with a Corbin seat. It its quite a bit lower than the stock seat and more comfertable for that matter as well [:D] Welcome to the club. First chick in our little group on a 1000F [;)]

I agree on the seat, but the shock might not be the ticket. Yes it will make it lower, but finding a good '89 or older shock is going to be a challenge. Those shocks best days are well behind them. I don't think they can be rebuilt.
However, there is another thread below this that is currently discussing aftermarket and other alternate shocks.
Welcome aboard and remember, nothing exsists without pictures!

Hey, guys - Thanks for all the input! I really appreciate it. I've consulted with some friends/mechanics locally with all your suggestions - and we're going to try the squash the shock (preload adjustment), and then raise the forks in the trees. Thinking that should do it (without butchering the seat)! The bike also came with a Corbin gunfighter - but I swear, even though it's lower, it's wider - and I have an even harder time touching - literally tip toe.

At 5'2", with about 29" to work with for seat height - at the moment, I'm straight legged with only balls of feet on ground - near impossible to back this monster up. Hoping the shock/fork adjustment will be sufficient.

Again - thank you for all the info! You guys are great! I'm so glad to have found y'all!

Have a great weekend riding!

Congrats on staying with the bike and not giving up on finding what works best for you. So you don't like the corbin seat??? I would be glad to take it off your hands. Although I have a sargent seat on mine, I would like to try a corbin. Can I have first chance at it if you decide to sell it?[sm=innoc.gif]

Trips -> RE: Girl on '93 1000F - It's too tall! (6/29/2006 7:27:11 PM)

Some of the Corbins are wider which will make it harder to reach the ground becuase your legs are splayed more when on the ground.
