Question oMy air cleaner housing is cracked along the red bits and it has been covered up with globs of goop.

I had the side cover off the right side and tried to start it to see what would happen and it ran like a raggety dog so I shut it down. When I put the cover back on, air was forced to use the air filter instead of bypassing it.

I'm thinking the problem I've been having with starting could be fixed if I got a new air cleaner housing so no (potentially dusty) air could bypass the air filter. The goop is falling away so I don't think it is doing a very good job of sealing any more.

I'm going to ring up the local bike shop for a price on getting the part but I want to know if the air cleaner housing is all one thing like in the picture above or is it made up of a few pieces? I'm also going to look at ordering the part from a "cheap" supplier to see if the postage isn't out-weighed by the local markup. Any links to parts suppiers would be appreciated too. i have a couple I'm checking now but I'm sure there are more in Australia

Showed the bike shop and it looks like I have a case of the upside down intakes... there's a 10mm gap at the top between the flanges of the inlets and the air box... so now I get to spend some time pulling it apart and putting it back together agin... lovely!

I knew having a 11yo bike unaffected by stupid people was too good to be true!

But now if I do decide to buy new parts, I'm going to have to support the local dealer because they are good to me!

Run that by me again please?

I'm having a huge amount of trouble getting the air box out from under the carbys.

The fuel tank is up and out of the way, and I've taken off the two twin pipes that go from the airbox to the carbys. Do I have to remove the carby bodies to get the box out?

I very much like the idea of individual air cleaners. Is it simply a matter of getting the box out and slipping 4 individual filters over the carby intakes?

Can someone step by step me through getting the airbox out? I'll take some photos when I get home to show where I'm up to.

I want to go into the bike shop tomorrow morning and say "Can you please order a set of pods for me".

Can anyone tell me item codes or sizes that I can tell the shop so that I can fit the biggest (and therefore the best) individual air cleaners for my '95 1kF? Should I push for a particular brand?

I'm in a hurry because I need the parts to be delivered in the next couple of days so I can make a trip this weekend I've booked myself into.

I'm guessing pods 1 & 4 would be smaller than 2&3 because there is not so much room on the outer pair before it hits the frame, but maybe they all have to be the same size for correct air flow or something?

I just read a thread that says individual pods help top end at expense to low and mid range... not somewhere I want to go so now I am back to trying to get the air box out so I can clean it and put it back together...

I can't get the airbox out without removing the carbys and I can't get the carbys loose... please help... it's so frustrating!

Triangle,
I've run the Uni Pods on other bikes, and each one required a re-jet of the carbs to make it run a little richer. Not a big deal, but something to think about before you throw pods on it.
As far as getting the carbs off, when all the intake flange screws are loose, you might need to gently pry the carbs off. Start at either number 1 or number 4 and use a long pry bar. Don't pry so hard as to break anything. You should be able to tell it there is too much resistance. try not to pry on the rubber intake runners, they can tear.
I always apply a thin coat of anti seize to the rubber intake before reassembly to aid in future dissassembly.

There are two intake flange screws on each intake right?

I've got the 'A' screws loose no worries but it's proving to be a pain to get onto the 'B' screws/bolts. Do the 'B's need to be let off too or can I gently lever the carbys off without touching the B's?

I'm pretty positive you will need to loosen both the A and the B screws. In theory probably only the A screws, but in practice, both. The material used on those tends to stick to the carbs pretty good, so you'll need to get some wiggle to them to get them loose. If you can at least get the 1 and 4 B's loose, then you might be able to leverage them off.

end result
carbys are too hard to get off therefore just cleaned the air cleaner box as best i could without removing it
Swappped the carby intakes over (turned them upside down and completely removed all traces of goop
Fitted all back together as neatly as possible
either the carbys are squashed too close to the engine or the intakes are the wrong part
it is impossible to get the intake pipes to seat cleanly on the carbys without popping out of the slot in the air cleaner box...

Note to HONDA: Your airbox to carby design is s**thouse - I hope it's better in newer models
