Hi Everyone! I just bought a 2001 929RR (Black & Yellow) with 3800 miles. After an hour of highway riding, I parked it and noticed a whining sound coming from the bike. The whining was loud and continued for 5-10 minutes.

Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone have ideas as to what the problem is?

Thanks for your guidance.

I also have a 2001 RC51. Not sure if I'll keep them both.

Thanks for the responses. The original owner said it's the radiator fan but it sounds a bit high pitched to be a fan...

Well all you need to do is look at the fan, close to your left shin if you are sitting on the bike.

1) Did the whine continue 5-10 minutes after you shut the bike off or was this while was still running?
2) Regardless, unsure of where you live, it normally doesn't take 5-10 minutes for the fan to cool the engine down enough for it to shut off. It is possible though given the temps we have been seeing across the US the past couple of days.
3) Did you happen to notice your engine temp? My 01 the fan kicks on when the engine gets to 217 and shuts off at about 206 usually. I have had on some really hot days with stop and go traffic the engine get up to about 225 or so. When I pull into my garage and shut the engine off with the switch by the throttle the fan will only run about another minute and it shuts off.

If you left the bike running I could definitely see it taking 5 minutes to cool the bike off especially with temps being in the upper 80s over most of the country.

Let us know, hope you enjoy your 929 as much as the rest of us. I have owned mine since brand new and wouldn't think of getting rid of it. It is a very versatile bike. It goes little noticed, but that storage under the rear seat comes in handy daily. I fit lunch, notes for work, safety glasses, all kinds of stuff in there when I need to. Helps out a lot so I don't always have to take a back pack because I have to bring a few things with me to work.

Let us know.

Thanks again for your responses. I'm in the Washington DC area, it's been in the 90's with oppressive humidity. The high-pitched sound was audible after the bike was parked with the key out of the ignition. I noticed the 929's temp at around 190 degrees while jetting around the GW Parkway but I didn't think to look in stop-and-go.

Interesting, the radiator fan turns off immediately when I turn the key to the off position regardless of the engine temperature. Let us know what you are able to find out. Been just about as hot in Michigan so I feel your pain with regards to the heat.
