Hi. I've just passed my test and looking to buy my first bike. I love the CBR, but am not sure what to get. A friend has offered me an amazing deal on a 2005 CBR 1000, but to be honest I'm nervous it's too big for me and too fast. Should I really be getting a 600cc to start with? Is there are really big difference bwteen the two? Any advice would be gratefully received. Thanks, Mark

if the bike is actually to big for you then you should probably get a 600 but otherwise the 1000 will only go as fast as you want it to. i bought one a couple weeks ago as my first bike and im fine. i think either way you will be happy

Please refer to some of my earlier posts. Most any of them seem to have relevance to what you're asking. In a nutshell, a 1000cc is VERY DANGEROUS for a first time rider right out of the MSF Basic Rider Course. It'd be like buying an F-16 right after getting a pilots license on a Cessna 180. IT JUST AINT IN THE SAME BALLPARK. Look up cbr_nasty, who apparently just bought a 600RR as his first bike, and promised to post pictures. That was three weeks ago and he hasn't even logged on since he posted his announcement. Even a CBR600F3 is a big stretch for a first bike. I'd strongly recommend a bike with no more than 80hp as a first bike. And a used one at that, so you can save the big bucks for hotter machines later. The average M/C rider changes rides ever 2 to 3 years. Remember, this will be only your FIRST bike. You don't have to make it your LAST bike if you don't want to. Godspeed my friend.

I'd recommend a 600 also. My 1st machine was a YZF600RR and I loved it. I ran the sh*t out of the bike. Actually, the only reason why I stepped up to the full liter is due to my passenger. I wife likes to ride with me and the 600RR wasn't cutting it. Sure, it did well. She and I went to DC from NYC. The bike never gave me any issues and it had more than enough power...especially when it was just me. Find that RPM sweet-spot... and it's golden. Congrats on your new license and welcome to the wonderful world of Sport-bikes! Ride safe, exercise everything you learned in class, and respect the machine. Know your limits and never go beyond. Get yourself a 600... I guarantee you'll love it! Don't get caught up in the whole size thing...or whose di*k is bigger. It's not the size, but who you use it! (This applies to both the bedroom and motorcycle) LOL

DO NOT START ON A LITER BIKE! I have been riding street bikes for well over five years, and I don't need my 929. Don't get me wrong, I love my bike, but it is not for begginers. A 600 is plenty of bike to start with and grow into for years. P.S. If you do get the 1000 get a good life insurance policy for your loved ones.

Yeah, I wouldn't recommend anything remotely new for a first bike. You'll just be more disappointed when you lay it down. I'm not trying to say that you're destined to wreck, but more than likely it's going to happen. My first bike was a 2000 gsxr 750 and I know it was more than I needed. I have an 06 1krr and it's more than I need. Regardless of what all these guys tell you on here, get what you want. If you want a sport bike, buy a sport bike. Don't buy something that you don't want. You can get hurt just as quick on a 250 ninja as on a 600 f4i.

Congrats on passing the course. You will get all types of advice. I took the course last year (and did not ride anything else). Now, I just bought a 06 CBR1000 as my first bike and I love it. Would I recommend it to everyone? NO. It really depends on the person. If you think it is too big, then it is. You don't want to be afraid of the bike. I got so much advice...both ways...but once I got on the bike, I haven't looked back since. No matter what you get, 600 or 1000, be sure to practice the Safety Drills (in an empty lot) from the course until you feel comfortable with the handling of the bike. My word of caution is traffic, and this will get you no matter what bike you get. Please, get a good handle on the bike before you enter traffic and have to make moves and decisions automatically with little room for error. Be a defensive rider in any case. Which one to get...is up to you. Don't get something because someone else told you, but do consider others input...you ultimately know your limit and the type of rider you want to be. I personally think that the CBR1000 is an easy bike to ride, but then again,...I am not racing or hitting corners at 50+ mph. My suggestion is go sit on the bikes (for hours), lean it and push it around (back and forth) in neutral to get a sense of the weight your are dealing with. Sitting at a stop light (on an incline/decline) will be hard if the bike is too big. See if some shops will let you test ride. I couldn't find one, but I can understand their caution. I did all of the above (I must have went to the shop every weekend for about 3 hours for over a month). But I got comfortable enough to get my CBR1000 and I am happy with it. My friend just got a CBR600 and he is happy with it and he is a more experienced rider than me. Make up YOUR MIND given the comfort and confidence you have,...be sensible with the throttle, look both ways, use that mirror for a sense of your surrondings...and be safe. Let us know how you make out.

ORIGINAL: Evan_CBR I personally think that the CBR1000 is an easy bike to ride... ROFLMAO! Un be-F'n-lievable! Do NOT take advice from someone just out of their own MSF Basic Rider Course. If they didn't learn enough in that class not to buy a Super-Bike like the 1000RR as their first bike, they're not the kind of people to follow. Be smart. Spend cheap bucks on a cheap used bike under 80hp for your first bike.

Texas_IMA_DILDO, Are you still trying to chastise me because I got a CBR1000 while you were still sitting there "sweating" from a test ride? LOL. Look Pops. Give it a rest. Your constant abusive approach to me makes me nervous for the 6 year old you have at home...be a better dad than you are at your forum relationships...for the child's sake. Sleep it off...and wake up a better person.

i got a liter bike for my first bike a couple months ago and i think its fine. everybody seems to forget that you can kill urself just as easy on a 600 as on a 1k when ur in traffic or drive like a retard. wit any bike u have to pay careful attention to the road and drivers around u cause if ur gonna crash its more likely gonna b their fault. everybody that says u shouldnt get a 1k for ur first bike kinda forgot that. if u do get one i suggest being real light on the wrist. i scared the crap outa myself the first day i had it and since then ive been easin into it and seein its performance open up before me. it is a real comfortable bike to ride and i personally like it cause when some old lady wit blue hair that can't see over the steerin wheel does swerve into my lane (i live in florida home of the retirees that dont know how to drive) i like havin that extra bit of torque to get the hell outa the way. like i said b4 just b carefull wit what ever bike u get cause u r never gonna b able to ride either bike to its max and if u can then u should b a pro and givin us tips. let us know what u get

I am from Philly and most of the guys here will jump on a 1000cc in a second. Is that a good thing? Well, that depends on the rider,...but there definitely is no caution about getting a 1000cc around the guys here. Not only that, the BUSA is the most popular bike that I have seen on the street, even with new riders. Now I must admit, I do hear and have seen some guys who got jacked up, but they were moslty doing something they had no business doing. Bottom Line. Be Careful and Aware at all times. If you want to go really fast,...do a track. Much like a gun,...any size bike can be dangerous in the wrong hands. Congrats on your bike!!!
