That, "Total Control" by Lee Parks, is a good recommendation there 2W. "The enemy is within."? Oh, yes. There are only two mental states that have gotten me into dangerous situations: (1) When I'm tired. (2) When I'm trying to impress someone. I've been lucky that (2) hasn't gotten me or my bikes damaged. But (1) has gotten me twice: Just last Friday I tipped my CBR over in a restaurant parking lot. I was so damned tired I didn't even have the strength to pick it up by myself. I had to ask for help. That's TIRED! Seconds before I pulled into the parking lot I nearly clipped an SUV pulling out in front of me. Fatigue is hard to self-measure when you've been having fun on a bike.

Tahoe: I don't think that will satisfy everyone. You know the saying, "give them an inch and they want a mile". I think somehow we need to try to fit the Goldwing's 1800cc on the busa. No matter how it handles as long as you got the largest cc on a sportbike you are the king. Sometimes you have to wonder what makes humanoids tick.

I have been riding a 1200 sporster for 4 months and last weekend rode a 2007 GSXR1000 and it was so tame thought I was making a mistake switching from the sportster to the suzuki. I was never over 5000 rpms on the 1000 and that is why it felt so tame. I rode dirt bikes for years when I was teenager. I am 49 and deciding between 600rr and 1000rr and if getting the 600rr will want the 1000 later? I don't want to go 180 but, I do like going 0 to 80 yea. SO would a 1000rr be better for me or a 600rr? Thanks

first bike definately DO NOT GET A 1000 anything!!!!!! And I dont recommend even a 600 but thats better than getting a 1k with no experience. Only fools get a 1k as a first bike.

Never go straight to a 1000cc machine. I rode a Katana 600 to learn and became a decent rider on. I moved up to a CBR954 and just bought a CBR1000 to compliment that as I sell the 954. Big jumps I know on there but I am so glad I didn't try to start on the bigger machines. The Katana is way mellower than a CBR or anything and it was more than enough. Multiple times I almost laid it over becoming a better rider. Now I can whip a 1000cc machine around like a dirtbike after LOTS of ride time. But don't jump on one right out of the box. I've seen too many people AND FRIENDS get hurt or killed. Even so though, a 600 is still superfast, just not as much brute force or top end power. I've had my 1000 up to 176 on the speedo whether that's close to right or not and the 954 up to 172 and that was more than anyone ever needs to go. But you don't buy a bike to go slow either. Still, stick to a smaller bike right off. Buy one used or something and upgrade later.

I wouldn't recommendthe 1000 cc either as a first bike. I started on a GS550E as a first bike. Pros very little plastic work to break, good all around bike for almost everything (Commuting was great)Cons No wind protection, Tall and tipsy, Moved around a lot in trucker wake. It took me several weeks of riding around before I felt comfortable getting on a highway (And driving at highway speeds) any way and I still am more careful on my motorcycle than in my car. Second bike a few years later was a 95 FZR1000 (I got it in 98 for $4500). Pros fast (May have been -1+2), Stable, 45mpg. Cons HEAVY, Too Stable (Didn't want to turn (Needed 3 point turns on a 2 lane road to turn around)), I went TOO Fast too often on the straighaways. Third bike in 06 was my Kawasaki Concours. Pros Gave me a sporty bike with luggage for long trips, seating was great for long trips, luggage was great for shopping trips. Cons: Not exciting enough (Once you go to 130+HP you won't go back), TOO heavy, TOO top heavy, Not easy to maneuver around, HOT (Cooked legs), moved around a lot on highway, brakes SUCKED. So I bought a 2004 1000RR leftover this July with 0.1 mile. Good easy riding bike (Had great power and more flickable than my others plus I move around in truck wake but the bike is stable). Throttle is touchy (Very little free play so it can be jerky on bumps and railroad tracks). Power delivery is good and linear except at take off below 3000rpm if you want to keep the speed down for city riding, very fast when you want it, flickable at highway speeds, and light. HOWEVER it has a horrible riding position for everyday use if you want to go on long trips (That can be fixed but you are limited in choices), almost no luggage avilable to use as an everyday all use bike, the handlebars seem to turn much further to the right or left than my other bikes which makes it difficult to twist the throttle at slow right hand turns when your weight is on your right hand (Not as easy to ride below 30mph and in parking lots when you lean so far forward). I like my CBR but it is not as easy to ride as some of the others I have been on. I dumped mine in a bank parking lot too when it stalled and lurched forward into a depression in the blacktop. I was also very tired after a 63 hour week. $1500 in damage plus money for a helmet. I am very bummed that I spent as much as I did and a little over 2 months it is scuffed and not perfect anymore. This is the bike I want but I will add Helibars soon, taller windshield, lower rearsets, soft luggage, a softer seat for better commuting like I do everyday, and a Power commander III USB to smooth out below 3000rpms.. Personally for a first bike I would buy an older 600 or 750 as long as it is more street oriented than track oriented. That way you can ride it every day and be comfortable plus use it for everything. Buying a RR which is a track bike will limit your first biking experience. You can still get a sport bike but make it something like an f2 or f3 instead of the 600RR. Your body will thank you. Or a Katana 600 or even a 750 because they are cheaply bought and have decent power plus are comfy if you want a longer ride for say a weekend getaway. The only downfall is they are heavier bikes than the newer ones. Keep in mind that below 1000cc and one not track rated will cost you much less in insurance and that will leave you more money for gear. You don't need a track bike your first year and I am not sure they would let you on a track without several years of experience anyway. Probably they would but I wouldn't unless you have experience with your bikes quirks first.

Ask your question over here and see what kind of response you get: http://www.sportbikes.net/forums/new-rider-forums/ They'll all tell you to start smaller than a 600SS bike (and I agree).
