I recently picked up a 99 600f4, 15k miles, pretty damn clean IMO. This will be my first motorcycle and so far ive ridden it for about 5-6 days. In any case, it has a ticking noise which I did some research on and determined its either the cam chain or it needs valve adjustment. Looks like i can do the cam chain myself, and I plan on giving this a shot. Is there any other maint you guys can recommend that I can do myeslf? Ive got a full toolset, air compressor and am mechanically inclined, just dont want to get into anything too hairy since ive never worked on a bike before, or anything with carbs.

You might as well look at either cleaning or replacing your air filter whilst you're taking the bike apart to do the cam chain, as it's an easy job and makes a bit of a difference to power, depending on how clogged/dirty your filter is. Just make sure you undo the screw on top of the air filter box before trying to wrench it apart, there was a story on here a while back of somebody making the mistake so it's something to watch out for. Also an oil and oil filter change would probably be a good idea, unless you know it's been done recently, but it's probably worth doing anyway to make sure it's been done and same as the air filter it's an easy job to do. To be honest the best thing to do is to purchase a haynes servicing and repair manual for the bike as they're simply ace lol. I have one myself and it's proved to be invaluable to me so far. One should set you back around £20, definitley worth the money.

You know your a mechanic when the pages of your Haynes manual has fingerprints or lines from your fingers sliding down the pages while you have your bikes blood (the oil) on your hands! Yeah as to the thread, start with the CTC, all those other things you mentioned, change the oil if you havn't already, change the oil filter, check your airbox, airfilter. What gas are you running, compare different gas octanes to see if it chagnes the clicking sound. Almost all sportbikes have some sort of clicking, most of us have come to know it as a naturual sound. Now when you have definite rattling inside or if you start smelling something odd (not your farts) such as a burning smell, or if you notice blue/white smoke coming out of the exhaust you should DEFINITELY!! STOP RIDING until you diagnose the problem. Congrats on the new bike and be safe, always remember when your out there, those people in cars/trucks/busses, MAKE NO MISTAKE, INDEED ARE IN FACT... TRYING TO KILL YOU!
