Realistically the filter probably wont help much if at all. MAYBE with the right map it would pick you up a horse at the rear tire, which isnt alot, but find 5 places to pick up a horse and you've got 5 horses. I have a K&N in my bike, but have never had a stock one in to compare so I dont know for sure, but I have no ill feelings toward the K&N. It does it's job and it's cleanable.

I dont think you actually HAVE to do it, but I would just to optimize the power you're looking for, otherwise dont bother with the switch. You wont gain anything just by switching the filter, you'll have to remap it benefit from it. Do a search for prewritten maps with your set up, Im sure you can find one. Download it and see how it feels to you.
