I'm sorry but my mecanical encyclopedia isn't so big, so couldn't you try to explain what you just wrote so a novice like myself can understand too

What he's saying is there is not chain involved with the balancer adjuster screw. The screw adjusts the depth of two gears - the crank gear and the balancer shaft gear. Kind of like the gears in a auto rear end - they must be adjusted within certain specs of each other or you will get noise, vibration and premature wear. Going back to what I originally said, wear between the gears over time causes enough space between the gears to cause noise and vibration. Thanks for the clarification Dad.

Now I understand. Looking at the Honda manual and what I just learned from you about the "natur" of the balancer it begins to make sence what that adjustment is about. Thanks for the clarification!

So with everyone else saying it makes a big difference i thought i would do mine this morning so........... fairing side off finds shaft, "mmm that looks rusty i said to myself and someone has already had a go at the pinch bolt". I find a spanner to fit as someone already given the head of the bolt some greif, B%LL*&5 the head broke off the bolt , so i took the clamp off and applied a little heat and out came what was left of the pinch bolt "sorted" i said to my self, 1 new bolt cut to size and everything is go, Or so i thought, ok clamp back on , right now to adjust the shaft, only the bloody shaft won't turn, its siezed! So all i can do now is keep soaking it in penetrating oil and hope it will free itself unless anyone has any other idea's?

Maybe the "short sharp shock" treatment would help, but i'm guessing you have tried that already. By the way karlo1000 - what is that exhaust system on your bike? (Apologies for mini thread hijack)

Hi all... my CBR rattles so figured I'd give the backlash adjust a try. Only got the bike last Thursday so it's all new to me. Fairing came off reasonably easy. Clamp bolt undone relatively easy and the adjustment screw was stiff to move but once cracked it turns freely... It looks as though it's never been adjusted! Can't seen any evidence of anyone being there as it's as dirty as the rest of the bottom of the motor. Anyway... I'm a bit concerned. I started turning counterclockwise and got about 3 complete revolutions and it didn't feel like anything is happening. Is it normal to be doing so many revolutions? I stopped after 4 cause I'm scared somethings going to or already has undone inside the motor if I keep turning counter clockwise. Don't wanna completely mess everything up and having go ripping the motor out to fix it up!! How many turns did you guys have to make to get it to stop turning?

What I do is start my bike and turn it anti clock wise till it gives a wuring sound then slightly turn it clockwise till the wuring sound just about goes away. I found when it was cold and not running I could be turning and turning it with out any resitance so bit the bullet and started it, now I only do it once every 5,000 Kls BUT Make sure you dont completly back of the bolt stopping the shaft turning, just have it enough so you have to reasonable strong force to turn the shaft

Thanks for the quick reply Waz57... I'll pop out to the shed and try it now and post back shortly. some time l8r.... well made the adjustment - much easier with the motor running and can hear the difference as it's turned. If I turned counterclockwise I can hear and even feel the rattling through the screwdriver, then turn clockwise and then can start to hear the whining sound and the screwdriver gets tighter... so adjusted it about halfway between rattle and whine then clamped her back up. The rattling I heard didn't sound like the rattle I normally get, so back to the CC/CCT issue for me! Good to know it's there though. Plus I've enjoyed pulling the CBR to bits! My wife has gone to the city for a few days, she'd freak if she saw my latest investment looking like it is! LOL! Got the tail fairing pushed aside now... will work on the R/R mod with cleaning the frame and applying some thermal paste etc... It all looks nice and tidy, part from road dust. No gunk or anything untidy... I'm really surprised how clean this bike is for it's age. Definatly well looked after over the years... kept in the shed away from rain and dirt.

The temp should not get to high, and once you have turn it anticlockwise then it should be rotated through the first marker, but I have found that no two bikes are the same and you will find what is comfortable for your bike. And to do it at every service is a good routine to get into.

Fantastic! You are a legend! I've been quietly surfing this site for a while and have learned many things from you guys and your sagely advice. But after stumbling across this thread and working up the courage and energy required to do it I can't be more happy. My bike went from a bag-of-bolts-rattly dinosaur, to a quiet and refined machine that it always should have been. This thread really should be resurrected and made sticky for all to see because this advice can save many people a lot of pain and $$$ on unnecessary cam-chains and tensioners.

No, Honda recommends doing it with the engine off. Although that being said, others have adjusted it with the engine at idle. If you follow the proper adjustment proceedure, you will be fine. It only takes a few seconds to do this adjusment so dont fret about it too much. I did it both ways and just to know for myself I stared the bike and did the adjustment. Its good to get to know the sounds of the gears when its too tight and too slack. when its right where it should be it will sound just right to you. All the best!
