noticed that the speedo was about 15 miles and our off at 55. got to looking and the rear sprocket has been changed to a 41 tooth. the shop were i bought this neglected to inform me of this. my question is haw can i determine how many miles are actually on the bike. thanks for your input.

Stock sprocket sizes are 16/41 (on US spec 04-05 bikes)

really everything i've been able to find tells me that it should be an 40 tooth. even so what else would cause the speedo to be off by so much.

all speedos are off
when you change the gearing it is off by even more

when i put my 06 on the dyno the bike speedo read 185 at 6th gear redline
the dyno red 174

you have to get a speedohealer and then figure out by what percentage the bike speedo is off to make it read correctly

US spec bikes are 16/40 unless it is an 06
then it is a 16/41

the 04/05 euro bikes were 16/40

Ya, stock for '04 - '05 is 16/41. But if your speedo is off 15mph at 55mph then something ain't right. I mean 5%-12% error for a bike speedo is almost expected but you're talking almost 30% off. Are you sure it doesn't have a 15/42 on it? No matter really, the best way to correct it is with a speedo healer -- easy install and set-up.
