So, I put a deposit on a 1997 1100XX yesterday... Apparently the tach on it broke last year. My question is... is the tach on that bike mechanical or electronic. It seems that when it broke, the needle began to behave erractically, then spun around behind the needle. When I rode it yesterday, when the revs got up a bit, the needle would come back to life a bit. Any ideas on what is going on here?

The TACH is electronic, so it sounds as if you have a loose connection or a low battery??? But I would say it is a loose wire

If your tach is like the older 1000's, it is electronically driven off the spark unit. The first thing I would do is find the connection(s) from the tach down to the spark unit. I would take each connection apart and spray contact cleaner in the connection and put it back together. Then I would check the ground. But if that is the only electric thing that is malfunctioning, it is probably not a ground since usually several things are ground together. A wiring diagram would probably help. Of course, it could be the tach, but usually it's a wire that has a bad connection or is grounding on the frame somewhere.

A wiring diagram would be a great help...anyone have one? This is my first sport bike...never had to fool with much bodywork to get to stuff. Where can I get directions on getting to the wiring?

I like the Haynes manual. See if they make one for the XX.

I did end up getting a Haynes manual. It was a great help. From the diagnosis in the book, it looks like the problem is in fact the tach...but I am not confident in my multimeter skills to say for sure. Any suggestions as to where to buy a used tach...or a new one for cheap? That one on ebay went for $26! Now all I find is a parts store online for $286. Ouch.
