I guess in theory the faster you go through the red light the less time you will be vanurable to getting nicked by the old bill or hit by a car, run the damn light and get a tiny number plate !

The traffic lights will not change, night or day if you “flash” your brights at them. I have learned about the sensors in two ways. The first, I worked for the city on the streets department and the second I am a firefighter now and have the flasher on top of the truck. It is a simple device that sends a specific signal to the sensor at the intersection and CAN NOT be replicated by our headlights. Sorry to burst the bubble.

When I come to a problem like that before stopping at the red light I try to stop hard on front brake causing pressure on the censors. it works all the time, I use to do what you do get off the bike and push the walk botton ,not anymore..

Not true in Dallas. The bike lights wont do it, but my truck lights will.

Ha here in the good old SLV we aren't technologically advanced enough to have that... so its stop, drop first and roll... I think thats why they taught me that in school.... hmmmm...

sometimes you can see where the pavement has been cut for the sensors; it's shaped like a rectangle with the left and right sides located about a car width apart. if you can't see them, assume they are just inside a the tire width of a typical car. if you ride down the length of one of these sides, you will be placing more mass over a larger lenth of wire for a longer period of time.

i line up over the left or right line (left or right tire groove). i haven't had a problem yet, but i typically drive over newer roadways. i can see how older intersections with older equipment or sensors under several layers of asphalt could exacerbate the issue.

here's a link with some technical info (meant for bicyclists but applicable) and some more links at the bottom:

here's another link testing the "GLT" for motorcycles on a bicycle:
